Imperfections in watches is it a major problem or bother you?

If you have a watch and there is a small chip on the saphire crystal (can't be buffed out), does that bother you knowing it is there and you see it all the time? or like if there is a imperfection on the dial (factory dial) do you see that and nothing else? would you even buy a watch with imperfections such as those?

If I pay $7000 plus for a watch it has to be perfect. NO EXCPETIONS. I have a GMTIIC that has a fiber under the crystal and it's driving me crazy. So bad that I'm going to spend $50-100 taking it to an AD to clean it ASAP.

That's just me. Lol

If its a chip or scratch that it "earns" after I start wearing it I will leave it alone.

I certainly wouldn't buy a _new_ watch with a chipped crystal. But, for example, I have a couple-decade-old Datejust with some fine chips in the crystal edge and that's okay. It came by them honestly.

The one thing that bothers me - and keeps bothering me - is damage caused by improper repair or polishing. Nicked lugs are okay. Shiny lugs that have lost their sharp edges or acquired a wave in the top surface from a buffing wheel? Awful.

yes I know someone selling a watch for $7,000 exactly has a chip in the glass and also something on the dial and it is just been refinished and still has that. I would be looking at that all day and think less of it. I want everything perfect. why sell it if it has problems and just fix the problems? i don't get it.

I think it depends on what kind of imperfections we're talking about. Dust or other small imperfection on the dial would definitely bother me. But such things like bezel being half click off (like on my Sub-C), or seconds hand not hitting on the markers (with quartz watches) I can live with.

There is no reason for a Rolex to ever leave the factory with an imperfection on the dial. For the prices they charge their QC should be able to spot and pull a watch that has any imperfection. Scratches or nicks acquired after you wear the watch are part of life.

Life is imperfect, so no ... it does not bother me. If I catch it, I avoid it (say before buying) but I won't lose sleep over it.

There is no perfection mate... I can spot plenty of small finishing flaws on my car which is worth a lot more than that (not to mention on one self).

chips on the edge can be removed with a diamond file. I removed one on my submariner and it cane out fine.

If its a new watch...its gotta be flawless!

If it's a Pre Owned watch it can always have a new Sapphire xtal
installed or buffed if Acrylic. Dials can be cleaned and replaced.
Sometimes with old faded, discolored or cracked dials can add mucho $$$
to the value if its collectible.

The "something on the dial" would set off the alarm bell for me.

It means either, that the crystal once hs been broken or, that the watch has been handeled very unprofessionally.

I think way too many people on here expect way too much out of Rolex. You are all right $7k+ for a watch is a lot of money but in the watch world that's not that expensive. Rolex makes almost 1 million watches a year and they are mass produced so there are going to be issues. I can handle minor imperfections. Every watch has them. Now if I was buying a $250k+ hand made PP I would hold it to a much higher standard. I mean our $100k+ MB SL550 came home and I found a few things that weren't "perfect" about the car but personally I don't like to stress over the little things. Totally not worth it

If it's new, I want perfection. But, if purchasing a used piece, the price and size of the chips or scratches would determine how much imperfection I could tolerate.

If I'm buying pre-owned I can deal with chips and scratches if priced accordingly. Besides, if they aren't scratched when I get them, they will be soon afterward!
