I always switch mine off and wonder that if a mobile phone can make the plane crash do I really want to be on it

I always comply, but then I wonder what sort of interference my phone could cause. I multiply that by 250 other passenger phones switched on and think. For the sake of safeness 'why not comply' I think it's selfish when people disregard the safety of others by being ignorant.

If you have ever heard a GSM "sim chip" cell phone next to a speaker right before it rings you will hear what the flight deck hears, only much louder. Lots of electronics give off a pulse. I always power down. It is important for everyones safety.

I seem to recall (prob on Mythbusters , I know I know) that the original Analogue phones were the reason we had to shut off our phones onboard planes, they did various tests aon all types of handset and the old school analogue units did interfere in tiny fashion with some instruments on a flight deck. However the mordern digital handsets were fine. I am guessing its easier to have one rule for all rather than policing what can and cannot be switched off.
I am guessing its the same with hospital wards. Its almost as bad as smoking in hospitals to some people.

Chris did you fly your plane to the London GTG ?

Yeah, I comply with the policy. I can handle waiting 5 minutes till we're at the proper altitude to turn on my iPad. Whether it interferes with anything or not at takeoff is beyond my expertise.

Well with WiFi now a feature on some aircrafts I use discretio, only when the flight crew instructs us we can use our electronic devices is when I use them. On my latest flight I actually learned how to post pictures on TRF using photobucket Come to think of it I haven't really slept and have been using TRF to research a few models I am curious to learn more about... I think I am a TRF-aholic!

I leave my phone on, and if it buzzes I just wait until I land to see who called or texted me.

I was on cruise to Mexico a couple of years ago. I happened to be seated at a table with an aircraft mechanic. I asked him if he knew why we were told to turn off our devices when we fly. he said he that he didn't, but he did know that the wiring in a commercial aircraft is so heavily shielded from stray radiation that it can't possibly be affected by the use of the passenger's computers and cell phones.

I always comply, for many reasons.

1) It's their plane, their rules, so no need to be the dick challenging them.

2) I can easily go a few minutes without using my device.

3) It can have an impact on nervous fliers who witness others leaving their phones on - they really aren't in a position to be convinced it's safe only minutes before takeoff.

Those are the same reasons for me too

To be honest, watching a big tube with seats and people filling it up is quite the sight to see and its not pretty, I'd just assume pop ear plugs in and cover or close my eyes to it all...

I guess it would be too simple to take a plane, make it remote control and put a phone in every seat in the on position and see what happens? Solve this once and for all...
