Buying a Rolex from a duty free shop

I will be taking a cruise in the next few months, does anybody have any experience buying from duty free shops, like what i could expect to pay (for a ss sub-c)

I can tell you that generally duty free shops are not necessarily a bargain. I'm going on a cruise next week and will be checking AD's for good deals.

Am also curious. Next month I'll be passing thru some international airports and plan to look at some Rolex's at the duty free. Don't know what to expect.

All you will save is sales tax. No discounts on SS Sports models.

London Heathrow, June 2011 - up to 20% discount on Rolex. Ok, it was at an airport, not on a cruise, but duty free still.
I would give it a shot... .
Enjoy the cruise.

Plan to negotiate and be careful about the currency exchange float if using a credit card. I've bought several high ticket items in duty-free.

The seller still has full gross margin despite the price that looks "good" to you. So there's still room for a better final price.

I was in Frankfurt Airport a few days ago and priced my Sub C TT. It was 100 dollars cheaper than what I paid for it from the Rolex AD in Saudi Arabia. In Saudi import duties are low and there are no sales taxes. Before when I flew through Geneva their Duty Free prices were crazy because of the Swiss Franc. That has come off its highs so maybe they are more reasonable.

I've flown through Amsterdam several times and the prices there are always high, although the selection is pretty good. They're spread throughout the airport.

I bought a DSSD at duty free in Korea earlier this year and got a good discount (20%) and the transaction was in $US so I did not loose any on the foriegn exchange. One heck of a deal I thought.

I was recently in the Jamaica Montego bay airport (aka duty free mall) and the Brietlings, alcohol, and cigars were normal prices. People were going crazy buying the alcohol.

IMO Duty free doesn't automatically mean great discount, you still have to shop prices.

Tax Free Watches / Returning to UK

In my experience buying abroad or in a airport duty free may save the taxes however it is usually around 7-8% in the US as oppossed to 20% Vat in the UK.

I found recently the saving in the Caribbean to be no better than what can be negiotiated sensibly back in the UK .Also its worth pointing out that on re-entry to the UK and I assume everywhere else if Declared or Caught its my understanding you get to pay the relevant tax which in the UK is 20% Vat plus 25% Import duty yes thats +45% making it a very expensive purchase. So Keep it right up your sleeve Lol!

For the record we are currently paying $9.5 a gallon for fuel/Gas you guys dont know what you are missing with your low rate taxes! Lol!

However the positives are the selection available in some of these places, I was offered a SS Daytona out of the safe in AH Rise in St Thomas, I felt like a Fat Kid in a Sweet Shop Lol! but had to decline due to the recession and I am still sweating lol.

I thought the term "Duty Free" was pretty self-explanatory.

It also stands to reason a cruise ship would not have a large stock of the latest and greatest.

As most folks know, cruises are skewed to the elderly / Sr. Citizen crowd. I would predict several flavors of DateJusts (lots of Two Tones) and not much else to choose from.

You could not pay me to take a cruise...but to each his own.

I'm going to Hong Kong at the end of the month and planning to get a Sub 14060M out of Heathrow airport.
I've compared the price from the UK and HK and it is cheaper here (at the airport) it should cost £3491.67 tax free, with tax it is £4190.00.
Hopefully I will have a sub on my wrist soon as long as they have one in stock!!!
