1996 Retail Pricing: Daytona vs Explorer

At my Rolex watchmakers shop today (Chamosa in Dallas ) and picked up a 1996 watch industry pricing catalog. Flipped to Rolex and had to re-read the retail prices to make sure I was reading correctly:
  • Explorer $3050
  • Daytona $3050
  • 16610 Sub $3150 or maybe $3200

The Daytona was priced right with other stainless models and now it far exceeds their retail pricing.
When and why did their pricing strategy for the Daytona change?

I find that hard to believe.

It's interesting/depressing to look back at those prices.

Same as $4406 now. Wonder if I can get my AD to let a Daytona go for that? I'll pay cash.

Here's a chart showing the price evolution to the last price increase. The SS Daytona was $5100 in September 1996.

Prior to that the price was $3850, beginning in September 1992.

Beginning in 1992, the Explorer was $2100.

The Explorer II was $2750.

The 16610 was $2850.

I paid $3,200 for my Pepsi GMT in 1996... the Daytona was $5,100 but traded at around $10,000 from what I can remember...

Well back in the 1982/3 the 6263 Daytona was just £882, Sub date £1012,GMT11 £998,Explorer11 £998,SD £1161,DJ £1052.And even the Oyster Quartz was £992 a £100 more expensive than a 6263 Daytona how times have changed today.
