Rolex is the only wristwatch manufacturer that I know of who uses 904L steel while everyone else uses 316L.

In certain corrosion environments 904L grade steel will have less pitting than 316L, but I would tend to think that most "divers" or people wearing the watch on a normal basis would not encounter this risk. I haven't read 904L handles sea water corrosion any better than 316L, but I do know that 904L performs better with chlorides, sulfer dioxide gas and some other toxic materials. The two are pretty much the same hardness.

904L is more expensive than 316L and has a higher nickel content.

So I am not quite sure why Rolex uses 904L instead of 316L as all the other manufacturers do. I don't think I have ever heard an actual Rolex Representative explain their reasons. But whatever their reason is, they must be convinced they are right because they pay more for it.

A mate of mine has a change purse made from a Kangaroo B-LL sac Please tell me he is making this up, and there is no such thing? Gives new meaning to not putting money in your mouth.

Sorry JJ I don't know the difference between 904L and SS.

904L has about a 20% higher nickle content. Which causes irritation to some people, especially when one sweats and the sweat causes the Nickel to be distributed.

Think the use of 904L is pretty worthless, as never seen or heard of other watch manufactures which all use 316 SS, ever corroding. Think just a ploy by Rolex to justify charging more.

The all-time classic Bugs and Elmer routine has to be "Kill Da Wabbit":

That said, throw Daffy into the mix and the real fun begins. "Duck season! Rabbit season!".

I learned a "lesson" with surgical stainless steel early on in my career. I purchased an expensive surgical instrument from a high end German instrument manufacturer. After using the instrument a short time, the instrument became all spotted and "stained". So I contacted the manufacturer's rep for a replacement or explanation since it was "STAINLESS" steel.

Well, I didn't get a replacement, because he told me that it was STAINLESS steel which means it wasn't stain PROOF, it simply stained LESS!!!!
