Patek Philippe
Browsing around my local AD today looking at Rolexes, wanted desperately to try on a ptek philippe just for the experience, to say ive had one on my wrist, i couldnt as i felt embarassed because there is no way i could afford it (£28,000)
Regreting it now sort of :P Is this normal? |

There's no reason to feel embarrassed! I don't know about your AD but unless it's a really busy one jewelers don't mind letting you try high-end watches (as long as you don't ask to try them all and stay for hours).
I for one went to Switzerland at 20 years old and tried a 19 800 Swiss Francs Calatrava in Yellow Gold, the lady was very polite and kind and she gladly went in her safe to make me try it on! Just remain polite and nice and they won't mind for a watch or two!

I've tried on a few that were more than I would ever pay for a watch. I tried on a Richard Mille watch in Vegas and the price tag was $650,000. How often does one get a chance to try on such an expensive watch, so I figured I might as well check it out. I didn't feel embarrassed. I don't think I will ever be able to afford all of the watches I would like to own. So I enjoy window shopping and trying on different watches when offered. It's all a part of the addiction to this hobby.

I tried on a patek nataluis nice watch but a SS watch for 25K I dont think so. The movement was nicely finished but did not offer a balance a bridge which is a prerequisite in a high end watch.

I've tried on a Richard Mille RM27 and a $1M Hublot. Funny thing is neither watch did anything for me... other than save me time and money.

But it's always fun looking. Vegas and New York are my favorite window shopping cities.

- You tried those watches. - You found them very nice. - You asked if they would let them go for 10k. - They refused. - You left the place stomping and you slammed the door. Am I right? I must because I do this all the time...

I try on watches I wouldn't drop that kind of cash on all the time. Heck when I was in the market for my Contender I took out a $1.4m Viking for about 30 minutes. The salesman knew I wasn't really in the postition to buy the boat (as we had talked about price and what I wanted) but he knew I was serious about purchasing a 33T. I think he was trying to do anything help with the sale. It worked and I purchased the boat (not the Viking the Contender). Salesmen of high end goods know 99% of the time it's not going to be a sale but a good salesmen will put up with a lot for that 1% chance of a large purchase. No need to be embarrassed. It's their job.

I need the money in my pocket to really enjoy the trying on experience. Having said that if I was at a GTG with a bunch of other enthusiasts I would go for it no problem. |

I was the same way for a long time. Not because I couldn't afford one but because I had no intention of buying one. One day I said, trying it on won't hurt right? I think it was a complicated Calatrava and I really grew to appreciate Patek. Same thing happened with Panerai, AP, Lange, etc... If you want to save money don't try it on!

If I was an AD i'd let customers try on any thing they asked for, who knows that guy who came in to buy a 7K Rolex may well be tempted into a 20k Patek, thats up selling in action. if he want to try it he's intrested ......then there's always 0% interest sir
