swiss v swiss made

Hi,

Advice please!? I have just purchased a 1999 Submariner date, stainless steel black dial - at the 6 o'clock position it shows 'swiss made', however on a number of forums I have seen that 1999 subs have just 'swiss' in this position. Please could someone tell me when 'swiss', switched to 'swiss made', is my model on the cusp of the change?

Cheers,
Grailor

A serial was the switch-over from Tritium to Luminova. Most A serial will say SWISS at the botton. If it says SWISS MADE it could be a service dial. Others may weigh-in too here.

Thanks for the response. So are you saying that the change from swiss to swiss made happened during the 'A' serial number. I think mine was around October 1999, based on the clasp code (X10).

Well today with Rolex nothing is written in stone although the change from Tritium to Luminover was around 1998 with the A serials. All these Internet codes are just a approximation when a case/clasp was stamped and not when a watch was made. Now A serials ran from November 1998 till approx December 1999 but could be overlaped. And they started using Swiss Made early 2000 on, so its possible some of the last of the A serial cases could have Swiss Made on Dial.

Many thanks. The watch is in great condition and I am really happy with it but this was the one 'concern' I had. Is there anything else I can do to check whether this is the 'original' dial? Guess we could poll for any tother A series 'swiss made' Submariners!!!!?

Here you go

Swiss Dials

On modern day Rolex it was the change from Tritium dials to Luminover roughly from 1998 till 2000, A and P series possible late U series, then sometime in 2000 they switched to Swiss Made. But Swiss was used on all Rolex watches till around 1960 but then the lume was radio active radium.

Happy Easter

It is extremely unlikely that a watch only a decade old would have had the original dial changed.

Even if it did though, it would be irrelevant as you would have no way to know..

My A-serial GMT-Master II has the Super-LumiNova dial, and is marked "Swiss Made". It also has solid end links, and the SELs are usually associated with GMT-Master II watches produced in 2000 and later.

I got a U series Submariner with "SWISS" Dial as well. I would say late U to A series would have the "SWISS" dial. Production would be 1-2 years.
