2002 Datejust MOP Diamond Number Dial

I'm a pawn shop owner and I'm having to replace a customer's Rolex that an employee stole (he apparently was on drugs) while it was in pawn. The owner bought it new and claims it had a factory white MOP dial w/diamond markers. The watch was a 2002 stainless Datejust. Some watch dealer friends of mine are looking for one for me and having no luck finding one. We're starting to wonder if they even offered that dial in 2002, especially since I don't remember it having a MOP dial. Diamond markers, yes. MOP, no.

The customer went and looked at new Rolexes, and took a pic of one with a dial like he now claims his watch had. I don't mind replacing his watch with what he had, but I'm starting to think he's trying to get one over on me.

Did Rolex offer such a dial in 2002? Any help is appreciated.

Yes there are 3 MOP dials for the 2002 year.

Pink MOP - Applied gold Arabic numerals.

White MOP - Applied Gold Roman numerals

White MOP with 10 Brilliants

It should be for the 16234 DJ with a white gold fluted bezel.

if he bought it new, he should have the "papers" warranty documents and would state what dial it had.
I would say it would run about $2500 to just buy the dial alone. Best deal would be to buy it on a watch.

Unfortunately, he has me over a barrel. We are regulated by Consumer Credit. By law, I have to make him happy, and since we didn't describe what kind of dial the watch had (other than having diamond markers), we have to give him whatever he says it is and he has no obligation to prove it.

I was hoping to get lucky and find a dial at a decent price. I guess that's not going to happen. I'll keep looking for a watch.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it.

On the plus side, one of my watch dealer friends found a 2002 with the right dial. Not cheap, but it could be worse.

Good on you for making everything right. It says a lot that you would find a place to ask the experts so you can get the proper replacement for your customer.
