Omega v Rolex, in white gold
I posted in another section of this forum, Watches (Non-Rolex) Forum, the following,
A friend of mine asked me this question and I was unable to answer, since I have never owned, any of these watches. He is toying with the idea of buying, either a white gold Rolex Day-Date model reference 1803 or a white gold Omega Constellation 'C' model reference 168009. Which of the two is rarer and also, which of the two will keep its value better, if and when he wants to re-sell it, after a period of time to upgrade. Between the two time-pieces, which one will be more more desired by collectors, in the long run? and apparently, the response is in favor of Rolex. I may be wrong, generally a Rolex is more expensive than an Omega and I do not know, whether my friend has the budget for it. Currently, there is a Constellation in 18k solid white gold appearing on the world's most popular auction site and do you think, I should ask my friend to look into it and just forget about Rolex, since chances are Rolex is going to be more expensive. (It is interesting to note, stated in the listing: 'The Omega C-shaped Constellation in 18K solid white gold was produced in a less than one hundred pieces only and not in their hundreds or thousands.') |

I'm not sure that the number that were produced equates to "rarity" more than, perhaps, a lack of demand for that particular model.
Don't take my comment wrong, I own several Omegas. But not every model they make is highly desirable. There (almost) always seems to be a market for a Rolex though. |

I think that the Omega may be more uncommon, but in terms of re-selling the Rolex wins. With Omega there is a more limited market, but the Constellations is a pretty desired model at the moment. I think that the Rolex will be easier to sell, and probably more expensive. That's just my opinion though, I would tell your friend to not worry and buy what he likes.
