AD Knowledge (Long & Boring)
Popped into the AD in Dundee (Scotland) on Thursday as they had the new GMT II Ceramic in the window.
I asked the staff member if it was the ceramic and if so could I try it on, she replied yes and fetched the watch. Good looking watch and certainly larger on the wrist than my Exp II. Firstly she could not open the watch clasp although she stated that she had been selling them for 9 years I then asked her if it had the new parachrom spring and she replied she did not know but would ask the owner. He then approached me and said that it went only in the Milgauss, to which I replied Daytonna & GMT II Ceramic as well. Meanwhile the rep is phoneing Rolex UK. Owner asked where I got my info and I said the internet and he pointed out that I was wrong. Don't believe everything you see on the internet! Rep returns and says yes it has the parachrom spring. Would you buy the watch from someone who knows so little about their product? f |

Well, I guess it's different from one to another. My AD seems to place a lot of value on seeing the employees get the proper training.
Really it's what I know more the the AD that I go with. |

Well, basically it is enough that YOU know better, but I see your point. I have also experienced sales' staff that knew nothing about Rolex. But if the service is otherwise good (not "toffy-nosed" as some AD's are) and if you don't get a total refusal to get a discount - the "we are not allowed to discount by Rolex" type - I guess the most important thing is that you get a nice Rolex, preferably at a discount.
The most important thing is that if you have your Rolex SERVICED by the AD that he has an in-house Rolex trained watch maker that knows how to service your Rolex properly.

Point made Bo, this was not the dealer that I bought both my wife's Rollie and mine from I just happened to be passing and popped in. There was a bit of that snobbery thing going on although I had purchased a Wellendorf necklacr for my wife from them for Chritmas 06 but they did not recognise me. Not that I want recognition, just knowledgable & freindly staff.

ADs can be very helpful and knowlegable and morons!! In the past I have received manual Cellinis from ADs (3 from the same shop) wanting the batteries changed!!! and these are the people on the front line suppossed to be helping clients make the right choice when buying and with any problems that occur down the line (none hopefully) It does seem strange that clients first impression of the brand is entrusted to god knows who, who know god knows what about the watches they sell.

Most Rolex watches are sold at fine Jewelery stores. The staff are trained sales people, usually nothing more. They are more interested in knowing how to read a diamond cut and color chart than they are in knowing the different aspects of one of the several different types of watch they carry.
That doesn't make them a bad dealer..It just means the customer should know what he/she is after and not rely on someone telling them what they are buying. My wife gripes me no end sometimes. When at the store and she wants to know how something works, or how it compares, she starts looking for a sales clerk.. Please...I'm sure they are very nice folks, but if they were that knowledgable I should think they would have a different job.. |

I feel thankful for this forum because the AD salespeople I have talked to know very little about the watches. When I asked one lady about the arrival date of the new COSC No Date Sub she told me I was wrong there was no such thing and that I shouldn't rely on the internet for rolex info.
She also said the pepsi GMT was not discontinued and that the new ceramic GMT had the same exact movement as the old GMT. When I told her I knew that was wrong she said well I guess you know it all, huh? ...I just want to look at the watches lady! I left and have never gone back to that dealer. I wish we had a few more ADs around here to choose from!! The others here are not much better. You guys that have knowledgeable ADs with good attitudes are so lucky! Especially the ones that also give some discounts. I decided I will be buying from an out of town AD. |
