Hi Guys

Just after your valued advice once again

I am looking to get another (less expensive) Rolex to wear day to day as in my job the watch can take a few knocks

I have seen a 2006 stainless steel Datejust (box no certificate) and a 1996 GMT 2 Bi Metal (with box and papers)

I really like the GMT, Should I be put off by the age of it and go with the newer Datejust?

Is your GMT a 1675? They are classic. I have had two.
Next up will be a root beer. I do prefer SS for daily wear.

It's only the age that puts me off really, I don't know how much of a difference that makes

I work as an architect, so I am on building sites alot

My other watch I currently own is a stainless sub c, but I want to try and keep it immaculate... I love it

I think you should go with a pre-1988 Datejust with the 3035 movement. These had acrylic crystals, which take knocks a LOT better than sapphire, which tends to shatter. The even older ones, with 1570 movements, were slower beat, and without quick-set date, but easier for non-Rolex watchmakers to work on.

With the money you saved on the watch, get it properly serviced.

For everyday wear in terms of taking knocks, I'd think that the fluted 18K bezel on the DJ would be a bit more in harm's way than the GMT's aluminum insert (the surround is of course still 18K, but less of it ie exposed than on the DJ).

But an all-SS model would be better still, depending of course upon what sort of "knocks" you're needing it to withstand. 18K is far more scratch-prone, and the polished center links on the GMT (assuming an Oyster bracelet, but still holds true on a Jubilee) will show scratches more than will a brushed SS bracelet.

GMT would be my choice. DJ seems too dressy for your worksites IMO. Maybe a Pepsi or Coke model.

That said, a second Sub for work would be great!

I built my small collection by starting with tt GMT on jubilee...then president...that would e my route...you will love the GMT it is simply ... Cool.

Why buy a watch and not wear it?

You'd pay a lot less having your SubC serviced and polished/buffed as needed...rather than buying a whole separate watch to take the normal wear-and-tear.

Doesn't make sense to me.

...to answer your original question...get the Datejust. Not because of the age, though, just because it's a "cooler" watch.
