Did Rolex develop their own quartz movement for the Oysterquarz or buy one in from another house of manufacture?
I cant see the Sub getting the 3 cylinder powerplant. Whats the point?

However, if they made a model with a tuning-fork, kinetic or solar powered, I would, of course, be all in (sarcasm font).

Why would I want a quartz Sub??

I cannot think of a single reason.

I have nothing against quartz, but I wouldn't dream of buying a quartz Submariner.

Hmmm, interesting question. Do we buy a Rolex for the brand, or for the quality of the movement? Let's face it, Rolex in the publics eyes is at the top. In WIS's eyes, Rolex is probably a mid-level luxury brand. I must admit, a good part of the reason I like Rolex's, is the brand recognition. If a quartz model didn't devalue the brand, and is recognized as being just as good as any other Rolex model, yeah, I might entertain the idea of buying on. But not if it devalues the brand.

I love quartz watches, and my first nice watch was a Citizen Eco Drive Calibre 8700. Having said that, I do not like the idea of quartz on the iconic Submariner. Something would be out of place there.

No thanks. Putting a quartz movement in a Submariner would be like putting an electric motor in the legendary Porsche 911.

(Yes the Porsche 911 could very well be electric powered in the future for many reasons; environmentally friendlier and more fuel efficient just to name a few. But a 911 would just not drive, feel and be the same as the legendary 911 that we know and love, with an electric motor!)

I own one of the blue Omega SMP in Quartz and I like it, however it would not be right for the Sub. There is just something wrong about that one.

If they did come out with a quartz sub, the price would be adjusted accordingly ....then Rolex will become Tag Heuer

I am not a Rolex fan, I am a mechanical watch fan. It just so happens that Rolex makes a couple of mechanical watches that I enjoy.

So basically, if Rolex made a quartz sub, it would never be on my wrist.

My very first DJ had a quartz movt. According to the knowledgeable salesman the quartz used in Rolex watches (circa 1990) were their own and not bought from another producer (Japan, etc).

Never, Never, and Never for me. I have no interest in a battery powered watch.

If it was solar powered and atomic regulated I would buy one. It would be the ultimate watch in my opinion. The looks and build quality of a Rolex Sub with the best available timekeeping technology.

Until then I will have to settle for my beater Casio with Solar/Atomic technology. I wish this had the cleaner style and amazing build of a Rolex.

Paul, Rolex developed their in-house quarzt using the analog Temperature Compensated Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator method of thermo-compensation. I think that they are the only manufacturer to use this method of thermo-compensation.

I dont carry the hate towards quartz that many seem to have. My Paiget is Quartz but the value is in creating something super thin so it lends itself to a dress watch IMHO. I don't claim to to be the watch guru most on the forum are but aren't some of the PP Aquanaut's quartz, that is one of the coolest sports watches around. Certainly on my wish list, and unless my watch sites are lying they are not going for under $1000 either......

Quartz movement!? Eewww!

I would probably give it a thought but to be honest the Submariner isn't my favorite model, let along paying the probably high price for it (I do not believe a quartz Rolex would be less expensive). I gave the Oysterquartz Datejust (and Day-Date) a thought a couple of times but ended up with the mechanical model, I have nothing against quartz (in fact, I quite like them and I think they do have a place in one's collection) but I don't think I'd go for this particular one.
