Will you look down your noses at me???

My first post on the AP forum, and based on my first comment maybe my last, there, all legal disclaimers listed up front.

I know AP is one of the absolute top rank watch brands. So naturally one should be on my purchase plan to round out my humble collection. Now for the disclaimer, unlike EVERYBODY I am sure on this AP forum I just don't like the signature "OAK" style AP watches, but I understand why others do.

As a result I am drawn to some of the vintage AP watches including some of the moonphase styles, the old slim line gold watches, but I also like the basic and plain Millenary in SS with a leather band.

Will I be looked down on by the big hitters with their 6 digit big ticket platinum OAK's if I start with the humblest of the breed....

In truth is there anything I should know as a watchout on these basic AP's I am assuming they are still made with a AP automatic movement and that they should be reliable and dependable. All of my watches tend to be on the plain side of the brands. Even my Piaget is a very routine and clean face rather than over the top. My Rolex being a DJ with just an 18k bezel.

Sorry for not being the expert in AP, and if my lack of knowledge makes me not worthy, you can tell me that as well. I think I have 3 watches left to round out my collection. They will never be super high end, as I am not that well off, but I am thinking a Millenary may augment a PP Aquanaut and a dress Breguet to finish my collection. It will give me a mix of Sports and dress and a broad selection of watch makers that I admire (I tend to believe in variety as spice of life). I am not a fan of big watches I like ones that fit to my wrist which is not huge so a 38mm x 34mm watch would do just fine.

Hi Craig

Nobody here would ever look down their nose at you unless your trolling or shilling. All you'll get are concise replies and viewpoints and members willing to share knowledge.

The Millenary is a very desirable model and appreciated by AP enthusiasts. The older (non Millenary) pieces are becoming more and more desirable but my only comment would be the more complicated the piece the more expensive the service. AP sometimes used the same movements as Patek so that means expense.

Tony, thanks for the feedback, sitting here on my couch (no red sadly) enjoying Wimbledon, it will be a special 8 weeks to be in London. I can still remember how special the Sydney Olympics were for us.

Looks like London has turned on a cracker despite all the financial woes. Hopefully you wont take 30 years to pay it off like the plucky Canuks in 1976.

Glad to Here the Millenary is a nice watch even in basic form, you dont see a lot of comments about them, and the exotic complex movement ones are not only out of my league but a bit OTT for me. I would prefer to have a watch I can wear, I tend to like all my watches equally and rotate them weekly. If I get to 8 or 9 I may have to rotate them every few days. I prefer to wear than store, so while I like the vintage models the repair costs and fragility may bug me.

We (Canadians) are finally done paying off the '76 Olympics?? Yoohoo! I didn't think it'd happen in my lifetime!

There's no shame in any of the pieces you mentioned. A SS Millenary is an excellent watch!

I also like the 4101 SS Millenary a lot. Love the design and I think it's a great choice to add into any collection.

Nothing to be ashamed of. Royal Oaks are part of Audemars Piguet but they are not the absolute. Audemars Piguet is one of the three in the Holy Trinity of Watchmaking and those vintage pieces you refer to, are the ones that made what the company is today during its initial 97 years between 1875 and 1972.

Of course not! That is what makes the forum a great place~ variety of members and their watches! AP produces classic and elegant pieces, can't wait to see what you decide.

As James also said, the millenary 4101 is a lovely watch I would dearly love to own.

Mike, I didn't know that you are a Canuck.

Craig, I think most guys here just enjoy watches and so we would be happy for you regardless of what model you choose. Any AP would be a nice watch.

All yours Thomas or part of your shopping trip try outs?

OP: To put it very bluntly... who cares what other think? Having said that, no "proper" user on this forum will look down on you (and what would give them the right btw?) based on your choice of watch. They may not agree with your preferences, but that's an entirely different matter.

Judging by your signature you already have some nice watches in the collection and I look forward to seeing which AP you will be adding

OMG Thomas, what a lineup.

I sure wished I lived close enough to an AP AD to try on some of those beauties.

I guess you might need to add a few pieces on that list
