Advice on 1972 Day Date Ref. 1803
Hello,
I am looking at buying my first vintage Rolex. And would appreciate a lot input of the pros here regarding this specific watch. Is it original or has it been modified, ect .... Thanks a lot ! 01.jpg 02.jpg 03.jpg 04.jpg 05.jpg |

Everything thing looks great to me.
Really nice case, not over polished. really sweet. Hard to see the stretch in the bracelet though. You would want to see a photo of the watch showing the full stretch of the band. Nice. |

Looks like a fine watch in great condition considering it's 40 years old.
One question though, in the pic, those links near the clasp, they seem to be a different colour? Or is it just the lighting? |

Band is same color, It's the bad lighting of the pic.
I'm having the watch opened now to see what the caseback says, and will also make a pic of the band stretch. Considering all this, what do you think would be the fair value for this watch (it s a 18k gold) ? |

I think that would sell in a heartbeat if listed at 7-7.5k usd. And i think worth every penny, probably more. Does it have any papers? It looks as though it has never been polished and rarely worn. Nice. |

As long as Rolex 1803
As long as it is a Rolex Day-Date model reference 1803, you will not regret, since it is a really practical and functional watch.
I reckon, it is the most popular Rolex watch - built to last for more than a life-time, if well-maintained. |

Love the black dial, but as said, thst is really pricey.
I'm a fan of vintage 1803, especially those witih an "off the beaten path" dial version.

I would need a little better close up of the dial it seems to have possibly been refinished. The lettering on superlative seems a bit blurry indication of a refi. JMO Rik

World of difference in price
Kingair and glocati reckoned it is a white gold DD and you confirm it.
Like what glocati pointed out, there is a world of difference in price between a yellow and white gold DD. If the asking price is within your budget, well I think it is an attractive deal. The Rolex Day-Date is a work-horse and seldom do we come across one in such a condition. |

What could be the reason that the caseback is not stamped with the year 72 ?
I thought that this was for all the watches till around 73 |

There is no difference

Since pink and white gold were not popular at one time, Rolex did not produce many DD in pink and white. In view of their scarcity, today pink and white gold DD become more desirable to Rolex lovers, especially collectors. As a result of this, pink gold is more expensive than yellow gold and amongst the three of them, white gold is the most expensive, all denominators being equal. This rule of the thumb applies not only to Rolex DD only but also, the Omega Constellation, too. If you have the budget, go for a pink or white gold Rolex DD. Of course, the best DD to own, is one in platinum. Good-luck. |
