Well, I converted a small part of the decades-long intelligent, hard work it has taken to become a private practice-owning anesthesiologist into my DDII.

Money is time and effort made tangible and tradeable.

Seen that show: Barter Kings or something? It's a bit of a fraud. Let's assume for a minute that everyone who comes on there isn't an actor (big leap in today's "Reality TV"), even then, they would be predisposed to giving away their items just to make it on the show. Personally, I think it's all acting, though. Take the scenes when people walk away... who would walk away from a film crew without even a little curiosity? And then, how would they get permission to use those people's likeness on TV?

Anyhow, I digress. I have a cousin who's awesome at bartering. He's the Craigslist master. When he was in high school, he made about $30k a year buying, selling, and trading on Craigslist. Good for a H.S. student, but it's a full time job. If you make more than $30k/yr at your real job, you should think twice about getting into bartering. :)

Best I can contribute is that I bought an old Omega Seamaster for 450 and after I hit it with a soft tooth brush and dish soap I sold for 900. I bought and sold for 13 months in my very spare time ( half hour in the morning before the wife got up and about the same amount of time once she was asleep at night) and I made the cash for a new GMT II. That was is 05-06.

I owned alot of Seamasters over the months but I got to wear every one of them and had a blast doing it

Closest to a barter was monetizing one of my Mazdaspeed race cars and then buying a TT Daytona with the proceeds.

I have seen the opposite happen though - Rolex for race car.

I traded 3-$20 St Gaudens gold pieces in MS63 + $350 cash for my Harley Softail, but I haven't had any luck yet in trading gold for watches. Like most others here, I've paid cash for my watches.
