In search of a Graduation Present...
...for my little sister. She'll be graduating from a prestigious university come spring, and she wants a Cartier Tank Francaise.
Not a bad watch, and seems to be an ever popular trend with the girls, but I can't justify spending $5k on that piece, when I know she'd like a 36mm DateJust just as much - but is the woman wearing a men's DateJust just a fad? Should I get her the cartier, or should I find her something a little more unique? (as a side note, every time I see her, she wants to know if she can borrow my subc when she goes out) |

this is just personal opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. a cartier is a cartier, you can't possibly change a girl's mind about the brand image. since it is her once in a life time college graduation, i'd say get her what she deserves.

If you do some research Cartier makes a damn good watch. I think many dismiss it because it's a designer brand but the quality is there. The comparison of a Hermes watch to a Cartier isn't a good comparison. Cartier makes a very high quality watch. At one time I thought they were just an over priced designer watch. After talking to some informed people and doing some research I was very surprised at what I learned. I know Cartier does use some cheaper quartz movements but they also use some great mechanical movements that perform very well and have been making watches for over 100 years. The Tank is a classic peice that she can enjoy decades just like a DJ. I wouldn't call it a fad personally.

I would say to ultimately get her what she wants. My girl has a 36mm datejust with diamond bezel and a stainless tank. They serve two different purposes to her. She does seem to favor the Rolex more although I suspect that's because of a little bling from the bezel :/

Lovely gesture on your part.
If you wanted a SubC, and she knew that but got you a Cartier, would you be happy? No. So, get her what she wants. |

The good thing about this is that you can get help from the rest of the family to help pay for it if that is the issue. This way it will be a gift from everyone. You should be able to find this one quite a bit cheaper than $5K. Definitely go for the one she wants.

I also say get the Cartier.
Although you may like something different for her, she will be thrilled to get THE ONE that she has her mind on. Nice gesture on your part. |

Cartier makes an excellent watch. You can pick up a lightly Preowned two tone Tank Francaise from one of this forum's trusted sellers for about $2600-$2700. I have a TT Santos in addition to my three Rolexes (18k YG Daytona with champagne Paul Newman Dial with black subdials, TT Sub with blue dial and TT GMT Master II with champagne dial).
