High priced overhaul quote from NY AD

Good morning TRF'ers,

So I just returned from a trip to NY last night and I decided to stop by the new Wempe Rolex store, which was beautiful by the way! I decided to have my explorer II serviced having bought it on the forums a few months ago.

To my amazement the watchmaker quoted me at a $800 overhaul?! From what I've been reading about all over the forum $500 should be the price, am I correct to assume that?? All I wanted besides having the overhaul was a replacement crystal which I've seen is $90.

Can someone advice me on what it should be so I don't get ripped off. I haven't received the actual email quote yet, which I should get in about 2 weeks he said. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Contact Rik at Time Care Inc. He'll sort you out.

Although I recommend Rik too, it seems like lately $800 isn't out of line for an RSC overhaul, especially with a new crystal. I'd bet Rik would do it a lot cheaper.

That's about what it will cost at the NY RSC (including a new crystal).

I paid Au$900.00 at the RSC in Sydney.
It did not include a new Crystal.

Wempe does not do service. The overhaul they so goes right upstairs to the rsc. The price you for is from rolex themselves.

I already dropped the watch off but maybe next time I'll have to contact Rik.

NYMIke, I know Wempe doesn't do the service, the rest of your sentence was incoherent.

Yes, but the meaning is pretty clear and I had no difficulty understanding it. I'd thank him instead.

Thank him instead for what?

OK, let me say it another way: I'd just thank him for his time answering your query.

I was recently quoted $600 for the RSC regular service on my Sub. Add in your other $90 cost and any other work and the price is about right.

Last year I only paid $930 for a TT Zenith Daytona and that included shipping and a new crown. 800 seems high to me.

One of my best friends just had his SD services at rsc NYC. It was $913 for service and a new crystal and new insert. Not sure if anything else was done but $800 is about right.

Next time go right to the RSC 5th Floor Rolex Building, entrance on 53rd Street they are a one minute walk around the corner, same building as The Wempe Rolex boutique I believe. I just paid $700 plus tax for a vintage 57' overhaul so I would imagine you are in the ballpark. The service prices have increased a lot over a relatively short period of time.

I dropped my Sub at the Beverly Hills RSC last week. They inspected the watch while I waited and gave me a quote of $600.00. They said the basic service was needed but no parts such as crown and tube. Also quoted a 3-4 week turn around time.

I had my Air King serviced last year. With a new crystal and tax, it was about $900.

It's ok - I should have checked my poor phone's grammar predictions before pressing the send button. We all deserve legibility and clarity.

. . .
Basic service is 650, a new Sapphire crystal is 150.

It is just an estimate. Rolex will come back with the exact quote that must be approved before starting the work..

I'm glad I have a most excellent indie watchmaker who can get Rolex parts.

Welcome to the Forum!

$800 with new crystal is about right, + shipping. Watch will come out looking like new. There are other alternatives as others have suggested.

You make the decision if you like the RSC to do the job or not..
