Icon7 Is the Tudor Submariner 79090 the equivalent to the Rolex Submariner 1680?

Hi Everyone,

I posed this question in another post, but it must have been missed by the very knowledgeable members here.

Just a thought?

Is the Tudor Submariner 79090 the equivalent to the Rolex Submariner 1680?

It appears to look similar?

Till next time…

The Laird

Close enough.

I believe the 79090 is 39mm vs the 1680 40mm...

They are essentially the same case, actually. The major difference is in the movement. Tudor uses a reworked ETA caliber 2824-2, while the 1680 of course has the in-house 1575. Although the Tudor's movement can be regulated to be essentially within chronometer specs, it is not a chronometer movement, per se. It does, however, have a quick-set date, an improvement over the 1575.

Interestingly, the 79090 carried on this vintage styling (with matte dial and acrylic crystal) a decade after the 1680 was out of production.

i thought that the 9411 and 76100 tudors were more like the 1680.
7021 more similar to the 5513
and the 79090 more similar to the recent rolexes.

great watches all around. servicing my 7021 was very easy compared to my rolexes that needed parts.

The 7016 is closer to the 5513 both being no-date.

1680 being the first Rolex Sub with Date is closer to the 7021 imho.

Does anyone here own a Tudor 7021? I would love to see picture, or better yet s 1680 / 7021 side by side comparison.... Perhaps I could end my 1680 obsession and pickup a "cousin" Tudor watch with inexpensive and reliable ETA movement....

that is really nice. tell me, does the bezel click 120 times like the 1680? almost looks like the dif is the name on the dial and the movement of course. I have a 2824, thought of doing a project, maybe this is it. A local store here has a tudor sub for 11k. i thought it was a bit pricey, maybe he is waiting for the right buyer i guess

The 1680 bezel doesn't click.

From a beat rate and feature level excluding crystals the comparison would be:

7928/7016=5513
7021=1680
9401=14060
9411/76100/79090=16800
79190=168000/16610

Let me know where and I'll drive my Snowflake-that-I-will-never-sell up for that kind of money.

You'll never regret buying a vintage Tudor Sub ..

I got hung up on Rolex Subs for a while .... then switched to Tudors and have never looked back.

Each brand is venerable in their own right but Tudor represents a heap more bang for your buck
