Scratch In The Bezel Of My Rolex Explorer II 216570

I dinged my Rolex Explorer II 216570 against a door recently and got a nasty scratch in the bezel... the scratch was running across the satination over the small triangle marker between the 22 and 24.

Found some grit 800 sandpaper in my drawer and managed to re-satinise the bezel... finished off with a wooden toothpiece, would you believe it? Works wonders for the last touch.

Result:

Impeccable! Due to your great pics I just noticed that the size of the number 4 on the bezel of the exp II is smaller than the 2 in 24. Rolex are just full of intricacies

Nice one, Bo! So, how did you employ the wooden toothpick, exactly? Using the point or a snapped end to brush it?

That is fantastic Bo, another interesting post. I know I have told you already, but I am very glad to see you back posting on TRF.

If I get a scratch on my 216570's bezel, I'm sending my watch to you buddy.

Why post such large pictures when a average of 900X900 is fine for forum use and forum rules clearly state.

Thanks! If you look really hard, it's noticeable that there's been done some reworking on the bezel but I guess you'd have to know it to find it...

BTW.: got some scuffing on the polished edge of the bezel due to the sandpaper that had to be applied over the total width of the bezel... I got rid of those micro scratches with a Cape Cod cloth, taping up the satinised bezel and the endpiece before using the CC cloth, of course

I know that some Rolex watchmakers are getting a special tool that refinishes Explorer II (new and old) bezels.

Bo, would love to see a DIY...

Thanks, I'd be happy to help you. Just be aware that there's a ~ 1 year turn-around time!

WOW, that came out perfect... i always wondered the best way of fixing scratches or nicks on the Explorer's bezel, would you say the finish is the same as it was from the factory?

That's interesting!

As for the DIY, I folded the sandpaper and used only the "sharp corner" of the sandpaper to create the fine lines. You need a stready hand, a strong light plus a loupe, too.... the broken off toothpick evened out the slightly coarse satination and shined it up a bit.

Nah, it's not perfect. In strong sunlight, you can see it's not a factory finish. Nothing beats the factory finish... still, I'd say you'd have to know it's been reworked to spot it.

Maybe a fibre pen would have been better but didn't have one at hand.

nice work....the scratch-prone nature of the bezel is the one thing that scares me off the piece.

Yea nice job. I just noticed to scratches on the bracelet of my Explorer II. I have seen posts about getting the scratches out with green brillo pads. I have thought about doing that but the scratches are small and not too noticeable so I may wait as I am sure others will happen. The bezel has been a concern of mine, good to see they can be fixed.
