I jumped from Rolex "up" to AP. Well sort of, still love my Sub though.

Would a jump to Patek from AP be regarded as "up"?

I love the Nautilus and Aquanaut, they are both on my "got to have at some point list".

I think they are different watches aim for different customers (Ferrari vs Roys Royce or Good pop music vs Classic music or George Clooney vs Russell Brand).

I think AP 44mm watches looks better on someone who is younger. I think a pensioner will look a bit odd wearing ROO bumblebee or the Panda dial for instance.

AP ROO are more in your face. As you get older, most prefer to be more subtle and private. I think one can wear a Patek 5726a from their twenties til they become a grandpa! Can't say the same applies to AP ROO!

However, the RO 39mm or the newer 41mm is different!

I went from AP Royal Oak 15300 to 15202, then from 15202 to Patek 5711. I was back with the 15202 within a week. ROO is of course different from anything Patek offers, but I thought the 15202 was a good comparison.

The 5711 is a great watch, of course very well made; but it just didn't sit right on my wrist, and frankly, the finishing wasn't anything better than what the 15202 had, for frankly many thousands more. Plus, the 15202 had all the classic Genta/Royal Oak DNA with a fabulous movement (thinnest full rotor automatic), whereas the Patek's in-house movement was nice, but not all that special to me.

I have always chosen AP over Patek when it comes to decision time.
Just personal preference.

Either PP or AP is great.
However, I won't substitute AP for PP. The only solution is to get both.

AP is more for nice weekend use, dinners, going out, etc. Patek I would rock with I'm dressed up a bit or in a suit.

You get more bang for your buck with AP IMHO.

Dude, you have to be able to live in the moment and enjoy that you have. Don't always chase the next big thing - the grass isn't greener on the other side, it is greener where you water and nurture it.

Good post I think you're right on but there are young guys who wants to be more mature for their statue and older gentlemen who wants to feel young so there is enough room for an AP or PP for what ever state of mind you're in.

Right now I'm thinking the same thing but who knows what tomorrow will bring. PP might feel a little small for me after wearing AP. The transition could be difficult.

PP is more dressier but with the right swagger PP can be carried out with casual clothes....dressy casual clothes LOL

Paul, can't see myself letting go of the 44mm. Too impressive of a watch.

Hey Heru,
Age is in the eye of the beholder. I expect to see you still sporting those massive APs when you're in a wheel chair!

I've looked at a few PPs since I picked up my AP. Not once have I wished I got a PP. that said I'm only 28 and find my AP very well suited to my age. The only watch that's made me have the smallest feeling of "what if" was a YG GMTIIc with a green dial I tried on in August but id still much rather have my AP by miles.

Why can't you have and love them both? Or is that only legal in Utah?

After owning several APs back in the late 90s I purchased my first Patek in 2000. A beautiful Aquanaut. It really didn't do anything for me, sold it and went back to my APs. I will never look elsewhere.

What was it about Patek that just didn't do it for you?
