Opinions on this Sub1680...

I went back, again. They offered me a very good trade in value for my gmt. I stRted getting the walletout, Then I noticed that the winding gears on the 1680 were well worn- loosening the crown took skin off my fingers. This AD kept telling me about the benefit of their certified repair service----. Huge disappointment. Oh well, I am going to check out a red sub this Friday, can't wait to see one in person.

If I were you, I'd rather buy an outstanding white 1680 than a half decent red. I would also stick to one of the top dealers such as Jacek/HQ or Andrew/Sheartime. That way you'll be in good hands and you'll get what you pay for.

it's certainly a looker & a little highly priced but certainly not by 40/50%, for $3.5k/4k many would snatch at that price given the beauty of the dial...$6/6.5k more likely

I agree that 6k is a better price. The issue for me now is that they would give me $5,150 for my omega speed master and my Rolex gmt; I paid less than that 6 months ago.

At lunch today I am checking out another white sub, then a red sub on Friday. Lasly, there is a watch show in Del Mar, Ca this November, there will be plenty of submariners to see there, though I'd be buying from sharks, so I need to get my skills/understanding of the red sub in order by then...

They want to give you $5,150 for both watches, the GMT and Omega....

Yes, they would give 5,150 dollars towards the trade of their overpriced 1680 if I hand them my omega & Rolex GMT.

I checked back with Tourneau, their 1680 with yellow patina did eventually did get sold. However, after checking a few other 1680's it was clear that the winding gears on their watch were worn out, as you would lose skin off your thumb and fingers whenever you attempted to screw the crown in or out.

The interesting thing about the problem with this watch is that the Tourneau store kept telling me how their 1680 was fine/normal, and they had completed a full service at corporate on this watch. They even had their local watchmaker review it and tell me that it was fine.

At that point I felt like I was standing amongst idiots at the Tourneau store, so I kept shopping and eventually found my own 1680. Unlike the one at Tourneau, my watch has a perfectly smooth winding feel, and I have the full set of repair paperwork. All for significantly less money than their watch. Good riddance Tourneau, and here is my watch from yesterday's purchase:

Hey Alan I am glad you didn't purchase the 1680 at Torneau as it was priced too high even though I liked the patina.

Congrats on your new purchase, I am sure you are aware that it has a newer service dial that is super luminova and not tritium but just wanted to let you know buddy, enjoy ;)

For a short transitional period of time around 98-99 they had service dials that were luminova t < 25 markings where luminova was applied onto the dials, then they switched to the newer "Swiss" only service dials that are now super luminova from the factory.

Yeah, I essentially wanted a new 1680 from the 70's, so fully Rolex service watched was the best way to go for me, and the the service dial was OK with me. I will say though, this things lights up like a candle...

Glad you didn't buy the Torneau one. There are lots of white 1680s out there that are of similar condition for a lot less money, and with the correct tritium pearl!
