1st Post, Rolex Noob! Which Sub? Help!
Hmmm. I have a lot to learn, perhaps you fine fellows can help?
Please do forgive the following preamble, but I think it's necessary to understand where I'm coming from. Ok, my last rather hasty thread (and it's responses) got me thinking, perhaps I shouldn't rush things when getting my first Rolex. I know I want a Non Date sub, as a cyclops is just not for me. However, which Sub to get? The 5513? The 14060? or the 14060M? I don't think I want the newer 114060, just because of the size (I understand it's a tad bigger?! thicker?, bigger lugs?) Re the 5513, I was thinking not going the totally vintage route as yet, I wanted to get a newer lume non tritium dial, as I want my watch to age with me..... So that leaves the 14060 or the 14060m. I decided I didnt want the 14060M because of the extra COSC lines on the dial, so that left me with the 14060. Now, in the 14060 I thought about either getting a U serial or A serial as perthis article: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f23/tri...-a-446143.html As I liked the 'Swiss' thow back to the 5508, if that article is correct. However If I was to go down this route I would like to get the best example available, in mint condition and with a complete set of papers, boxes etc.. Failing that, I was thinking of getting the last Non Cosc version which I believe was the Serial Z, again mint condition and complete... However there seems to be issues with this model from some people (as there is no rehaut engraving?) Arghhhhhhhhhhh! (takes deep breath) So.... My question is: Is my reasoning sound, or (as I supect being a noob) am I getting this all back to front and getting the wrong sub?! HELP! |

Welcome!!!
Why do you consider a model without Rehaut engraving to have issues? Most of the models you ID'd do not have this feature. I personally would not want Rehaut engraving on a Sub. There are 14060M's with two lines. Just look for the best conditioned two-liner 14060 or 14060M you can find for the price you want to pay. |

Welcome to the forum!
I suggest you try the new ND sub C at an AD. Although the lugs are a little bit thicker, it looks gorgeous, has a much improved clasp, a nicer bracelet and the very cool maxi dial. It doesn't wear much bigger, if at all. Good luck on the hunt. |

It's all a matter of personal choice. A watch is intimate and with us daily. Pick the one you like, don't rely on our opinions. Hell, if you listened to me you'd be wearing a GMT or an AirKing.
When you see the watch you'll know it's the one for you.

welcome! i have a 14060. love it. depending on your price range, also consider a nice red sub as an option. of the ones you list; z serial with no COSC, just like mine, is the one i would go with. but as others have said, all are great. enjoy it!

I think it's unlikely that you're going to find a 5513, a 14060, a 14060M, or a 114060 at your local AD.
Perhaps because you're in the UK you may have a better shot at the 114060 than some of us here in the smaller cities of the US would have. The thing I wouldn't do is to over-think the process and follow your gut. You already pretty much precluded the 114060, based on personal tastes. Of course you've not tried one on, but the super-case and the maxi-dial have been out there for years now, so it shouldn't stretch your imagination too much to know pretty much what you're getting into with that one. I've heard that ADs still have the 14060M Subs in stock, but when I ordered mine in November 2011, my AD didn't know they were still being made and ordered me one once he got the straight scoop from Rolex USA. It took a month for it to come in and several weeks after mine came in, he told me that he'd tried to order another to no avail, but you're in the UK and I'm in the high desert southwest US. Finding a "Like New in Box" (LNIB) 14060M from a trusted seller on this board is a very good bet and you might also find one "Brand New in Box" (BNIB). You never know, until you ask. As for the 5513 in the condition you describe, I'm just not sure, because I've really not followed the vintage market. You're chances sound slim and the proposition very expensive to me. So to summarize, I'd suggest that you not only visit some ADs in your area, but that you send some inquiries to the sellers here. They'll tell you what's likely available and can give you the ins and outs of shipping and any particulars concerning customs, should that be an issue. Welcome aboard.

Quick update.......
Well thanks in part to Johny and having been to some local AD's and tried on the new 114060 ceramic and the date version, I am now seriously considering a 16610LV! Trying to source a decent complete sample at a decent price seems to be out of the question though! Man I wish I looked at these a couple of years ago when prices were still OK! Ah well..... |

Unless you area vintage fan, I always recommend the newest Rolex that your budget will allow. In this case, you already decided on a Sub, so get the 14060M.
