Treating and keeping Ol' Jules Verne looking like new.

Nubuck gator, fantastic looking, but no protective layer.Prone to dirt accumualation and shining patches forming.Uneven darkening of the strap with wear, due to the accumualtion of dirt and grime.Especially on the wrist side.

Very dirty ~ wash with liquid dishwashing soap and a sponge.Let completely dry and it looks like new.In front of a fan.DO NOT do this with other gator straps !!!!

Slightly dirty, shiny patches ~ Use the coarse part of a dishwashing sponge.Cut a small part out and just sand the dry strap with a small piece.Be patient and keep away from the sides and the ecru stitching.Softly !!!

Pics of my Jules Verne looking great after some gentle sanding ........

I can vouch for this method as well. Bought my JV pre-loved and it had a bit of a patina to it.

Chris mentioned his method to me and it worked great, but make sure you have a fan to expedite drying.
Great write up Chris.

Youre welcome !!

When not smeared and slightly dirty, just sand it a bit with a small piece of the green part of the sponge.Works great !!!

Thanks for posting this. Consumed with work and haven't put the beautiful JV on the 233 yet.

Let me add very big public thank you to the private one extended to GBJIV who kindly included me in his JV buy, otherwise a discussion on how to take care of this strap would be an purely acedemic one for me.

Thanks Gus !!!

I just tried doing this to my 1 week old JV strap which already has a dark patina on the bottom parts. It just looked like it was making fine scratches in the leather.

yeah, me too. i actually thought that was kind of the point of the JV - to have it patina. anyway, to each his or her own, and the tips given seem good.

Thanks, never would have thought of using dishwashing soap. I imagine a suede brush would work well instead of the green part of the sponge.
