IWC vs Panerai: need opinions

I am coming to the end of my watch buying days. i am on the fence if i want another Pam or an IWC? the pam's i am looking at is the 112 or the 000. only these two models. i have a 005 already. the IWC i am looking at is the 37701 or the Aquatimer. things i am considering are: how the model i buy holds it's value. movements i do like the fact that the iwc is an auto but that isn't a deal breaker. which one will hold up better to daily wear. any input from people familiar with these models would be helpful.

both nice pam may hold its value better but if you buy either preowned, it may be a non issue.

For me, IWC has the edge in the durability stakes, but it depends on materials and finishes to some extent.

However, without question Panerai would always hold its value significantly better.

of those four and ignoring my collection, i would most want the zero. the 37701's date window bugs me and the aquatimer doesn't do much for me (if i had to take one, though, i think it would be the white dial on bracelet). as has been said, you could go pre-owned on the 000 and probably never lose money.

good luck with the tough choice!

I have the big pilot 5002 and currently in the market to buy my first Panerai. I think you would not go wrong with either choice. I do think Panerais hold their value a little better.

OTOH, you already own a 005. Why not expand your collection with a little variety?

If you're nearing the end of your collecting days, depending on age legibility may be an issue in which case I vote PAM. otherwise IWC.

In general I prefer PAM over IWC, but in your case the 112 & 000 are too similar to the 005 you already own. No-brainer for IWC 37001. Some older Aquatimers are nice but the new ones look like they are made out of LEGOs & I'm a pass.

Given that you have a 005, this would also make me say go with the IWC.
Or maybe consider a more different PAM - maybe a Radiomir?

I think a 44mm would hold its value a bit better, but then again, you should be able to get the IWC at a decent discount and then you won't take much of a hit.

Since you already have the Panerai I'd suggest going for the IWC. Personally I prefer a watch that is automatic and has a date, those other times you got your 005 (which is a very nice piece IMO).

Ideally I'd try to find the older 3717 though - I prefer that design and size.

I have a Rolex sub, and IWC Portugese, and just recently added a PAM 312. Each serves a different purpose. For cruises and summer fun the blue/gold Rolex fits the requirements. For dress up with cuffs, the IWC is stunning with its gold numerals on a white face. For all else, I like the 312...with short sleeves, sweaters and long sleeves without a sport coat. Now, in terms of keeping time: IWC wins (+1/day, on average), the Rolex second (+3 to +4/day), and the Panerai comes in around +4/day, maybe a bit more, but still measuring. If you only buy one watch, I would say get the IWC (The gold yatchclub is a killer), but if you like to play with watches/straps, etc...the PAM is great fun. My other watches are worn on special occasions as needed. Hope this helps a little.

What else do you have in your collection? Based on your post I'd try an IWC - you already have the 005, so why not add some variety?
