FC & Ceramic
Can someone enlighten me as to the pros & cons of FC & Ceramic? How does ceramic compare to FC? Which material would you say is more preferred?
Thanks! |

Basically, Ceramic is an extremely tough material and highly resistant to scratches and everyday scuff marks, my ceramic bezel looks really crisp all the time even though the watch is a year old, it still looks brand new, FC is also super strong, light and looks so unique compared to other materials, I went with an FC case purely because it looks stunning and that the SS cases easily shows marks and scratches, where as with the FC case, even if you pick up the odd knock, it barely shows due to the mottled colour and look.
Cons... Ceramic can crack if you knock it hard enough and the FC case can split... But only in very extreme cases... But general light knocks and bangs stand up very well... Mine has had a few bangs...and it's still perfect! It is always down to personal taste at the end of the day, but I'm sure allot of FC owners on here will probably reassure you that in years to come, the FC will still look as awesome as the day they bought it.... |

Thanks for all of that info Collin! How do they compare in weight? I know FC is an extremely light material. Is ceramic as heavy as SS? I'm just curious how noticeable the differences in weight are between a ceramic case ROO and a FC case ROO.

If you had a ceramic case and bezel, It would be so much heavier than a FC case, I would say on a par with SS, I have the FC bumblebee with Ceramic bezel... It's extremely light, where as my friends SS RC ROO feels almost double the weight., so IMO a ceramic case and bezel would be similar to SS

I have to admit, I'm kind of a noob when it comes to these materials (but, it's something that attracts me to AP - the experimentation and innovation).
What's the advantage of ceramic over FC? Cheaper to make + appearance is more consistent from piece to piece + more scratch resistant (even if FC doesn't show the scratches easily)? Plus, I guess, in today's culture of "heavier is more quality", I guess ceramic has the "advantage"? |

IMHO, I don't believe there is any advantage between the two, when you see the FC in the flesh its unique finish exudes quality and a style that is unmatched,so weight is not really a factor, Ceramic as we all know is highly resistant to scratches, and is generally finished in a high gloss finish, the new ceramic case is brush finished, therefore (and this is only my opinion) does not look allot different to a SS with PVD/DLC finish, however I'm yet to handle one in he flesh so I could eat my words afterwards ... Maybe some members with more expertise than me, could set the record straight?

I have seen broken lugs on ceramic watches, have seen plenty of dented and chipped FC's but never with a snapped lug.

I'm pretty careful with all my watches so I'm not afraid to own either material but if one's pretty hard on watches the FC is probably the better bet as it isn't as brittle as ceramic.
