I wear my SS DJ Blue dial almost exclusively for smart occasions. I do agree that a true dress watch should be slim, and have a leather strap, like the Cellini range. But That's not going to stop me from wearing my DJ.

I think your GF is correct
There are plenty of thin classic gold watches on a strap that you could buy that wouldn't cost you a fortune. They are just go better with formal attire in my view.
Rolexes are great, I love the Daytona and GMT-IIC that I own. Lots of wrist time, some even with suits, but a watch that goes with a wet suit or flight suit doesn't belong with a tux. As you can read, knowledgeable people are all over the place on this issue and taste is very personal thing. Do remember however, that high price doesn't automatically mean the item is appropriate for all events. This gets wrist time at formal events and some might even find it too "complicated" or busy. |

I have a 1930's Hamilton with an alligator band, ruby's and diamonds at the indicies, it's a real looker. But since I bought my TT Sub I wear it as my dress watch, it's about as dressy as you want it to be.

A silver Tissot I bought for around $90 back in 1998 or so. I like the reverse snob factor on this watch with a suit or Tux.

I've read in a few style magazines that the classic mens formal watch is a Cartier Tank Watch (whatever that might be)........anyone got a picture ?
For now my formal watch is my Sub, with casual/work being the GMT. |

Any one of these performs admirably as a dress watch.

I always thought a dress watch should look something like a Patek Calatrava but after seeing the responses here, I'm warming to the idea of using the TT Blue Sub as a dress watch (My wallet is warming to the idea too )

If I could afford one at the moment, I would by a plat/SS YM as a dresswatch! The Oysterbracelet is wonderful looking, I don't think a leatherstrap would do anything but lower the aesthetic appeal of the YM!

I think the DD or DJ would be the most appropriate for a dress watch. Save the sports models for more casual occasions :)

It's a 1986 model, still going strong. It's perfect with black tie (but then so is my all black GMT-II ).
