Value

Will Panerai watches hold their value for resale like Rolex? Thinking of getting a 320. Currently have a Rolex GMT II. Thanks, Steve

Some will. You have to do your homework.

By the way, not all Rolex hold their value. I can attest to this after having taken a beating on a few Datejusts and a SS/PLT YM all of which were bought at MSRP at the time.

It really takes time to familiarize yourself with the Panerai brand, to figure out whats hot and what's not, and then of course to decide what YOU like. If you have any specific Panerai questions, this is a good place to ask for help.

The 320 is a very nice piece. I jumped into Panerai with the 88 which, like the 320, is a GMT albiet with a much busier dial. I soon realized that Panerai (for me) is all about simplicity and less clutter, so to speak. I sold the 88 and purchased a 422. I mention this because MANY Panerai lovers oddly, "progress" to the more basic models. Sandwich dial, no date, manual wind.

I, like you, also owned a GMTIIC and the 88 and never once used the GMT feature on either. Good luck with your decision.

No. In fact, the large bulky watches could be out of style in 10 years. I am also considering a PAM320; however, I decided it just sits too high off the wrist.

Only Patek, in general, holds value better than Rolex. I advise anyone, who asks me, to buy used or heavily discounted Panerais. In that case you'll usually do OK.

I find this comment interesting. I've been looking at Panerai for several years now, and find that the simpler, historic models are the ones I tend to gravitate to.

Panerai, Patek and Rolex all seem to have the "best retaining value". Ofcourse it also depends on the discount you buy it at originally. Some argue that Omega's also retain their relative value well as they start out with the initial purchase often at 30% discount.

I'm of the opinion that the in house movements will help in regards to to retention of initial purchase price. But, as Panerai makes the complete transition to in house movements in all models, I think that will also help the older ETA movement models hold value simply by virtue of the fact that there won't be any more. I could be wrong on both accounts too.

Do you need the GMT feature? If not, go with the 312.

To answer your question, yes they hold their value relatively well because huge discounts are not that common at the point of sale.

Only certain Panerais hold their value well, like rolex and patek, not all holds their value. A pam 390 for example, sells at premium when it does not even have a seconds hand or a sandwich dial!

yeah, there are those (like me) who think a luminor is at its best with a painted/sausage dial (+ the 390 is an SE), while a radiomir is nicer with the sandwich.

"Bulky"? Panerais are not U-boats and I don't consider my 233 "bulky" whatsoever...
...It doesn't sound to me like the 320 would suit you - try a 6497 model out or maybe a Radiomir.

As with most brands, there are popular models and none popular ones. I could make money off of anyone I have if I wanted.

I think you are, respectfully, wrong on this in terms of larger watches going out of style. Look at historical trends. They have consistently increasingly been made larger. Even Rolex is following this trend.

I hold the opinion that people should buy what they like and not be driven by what they could make on a sale.
