Winders-good or bad?
Being rather new to forum, I need some advice. My wife and I have stick mid-80's datejust watches. I was going to buy an autowinder as a gift for her. I was told that I could cause premature damage to the watches. I don't understand and need some direction.

No need really to use one for a quick-set date watch. With relatively modern watches, they're most useful for perpetual calendars and the like. I wouldn't use one on a pre-60s watch (with slow-set date) as it does excessively wear the movement parts (it's effectively running continuously).

If you search a little bit there are tons of threads and discussions on the pros and cons. Personally they don't bother me but I agree I probably wouldn't use them for vintage watches.

Which would you rather buy: a car that had been sitting in a garage since new, driven on weekends, or a car that had been driven continuously by drivers working in shifts, so that the motor never once was allowed to stop spinning? Do any professionals or factories use watch winders, other than on an intermittent basis for testing? Erm....listen, I know the people who make winders just need to feed their families and all but....

I see no useful purpose to running my watches if I'm not wearing them. About the only benefit to a winder would be if I had numerous watches that I rotate daily so that I would be having to set date and time every single day, especially if I had a couple of perpetuals in the rotation. I switch watches less frequently so having to set them now and then is no big deal. Saves wear and tear and increases the service interval a little. That can add up if you're talking about the cost of RSC service on a half dozen watches every five years because they've been sitting on a winder running constantly. But this is just my opinion.

If the watch is not running then it's not wearing out.
You have a better chance of extending service intervals if you let it stop when not being worn.

For non-quickset vintage Rolexes with a date function, I find winders useful. That way I don't need to stand there for five minutes spinning the hands to get the correct date. I just take it off the winder and it's ready to go. Still, I only do that with one or two watches that are in my rotation. The others sit in my case, resting peacefully, until they're put back in the rotation.

What it does though, is keep the watch running all the time. A watch that is running all the time is wearing itself out. A watch that is not running is incurring zero wear.. So, "premature damage" is a misnomer for normal wear.. If you are ok with your non-used watch running and wearing all the time, a winder is for you.. If you do not mind winding and setting a watch when you put it on, a winder is a waste of space, is cumbersome, and costs. Personally, I don't have one and see no practical use for one.. ![]()

No winder here either - agree with the above: pointless for modern quick-set movements, and I wouldn't put unnecessary wear on my watches anyway, especially my vintage (most of them). It's like leaving the engine running on your car, in neutral, in the garage, all the time... Nah.
