Kevin Ware update: successful two-hour surgery. Bone re-set, injury closed and rod inserted in right tibia.
Ware will remain in Indianapolis until at least Tuesday.

He's a young man, hopefully he recovers and at least can continue to play, but.....I'm sure we all wish him the best.

Yes it was a raised floor, I hate those. But don't know if that was a factor on the injury.

I don't know much about basketball but I am curious what do you guys mean by 'raised floor' that caused this incident? Did you mean the floor gradually sloped upwards at the edge of the court or was it a discrete level up like a step on stairs causing the force of landing to be angular thus causing the fracture rather than evenly distributed downwards to the foot?

Here's an example of a raised floor. Usually it's used to increase seating capacity. It would be used because they facilities are normally needed for hockey or other sports where there is more of a slope downwards and for better sight lines.

It's usually about 1 meter or less higher then where the bench is for the players or coaches. Personally, running down a lose ball knowing I could step down in a black hole would slow me down.

I don't think the raised floor created this incident, he just seemed to land horribly wrong on his right leg. Below is a link to the benches reaction to the incident...Link 1). It doesn't show the injury happening. This is a GIF.

Link 2).. The actual injury, very graphic, and a full story, another GIF with full video

That was so brutal to watch. Ranks up there as one of the worst sports injuries seen on TV. I am glad to hear surgery was successful and the kid is on the mend.

Yes, thanks for the link.

I have to agree with Grumpy Badger, terrible injury but definitely not the worst ever.

(As a complete aside, some of those comments on that YouTube link though not surprising (unfortunately) have me shaking my head with disgust. Rant over).

Boy that was worse than I thought. Someone sent me close up pics...I would prefer not to see them again.

It is certainly a shame! I note that Cindy Crosby got his jaw broken by a flying puck. Teeth were flying too. He'll be out "indefinitely." They should have some better facial coverage on their helmets.

Up close it was unwatchable.

Very glad to hear the surgery was successful.

Time does things. I watched the Theismann and the LT video years ago without flinching. Now, at 50 and still playing recreational basketball, and hearing that this was non-contact, I think I'll pass.

Was bone sticking out on the Joe Theisman injury? This is the worst I have seen with the bone literally sticking out.

Yes, Theisman's leg was wide open.

As bad an injury as that is (and I can surely sympathize as I have been rehabbing a TKR for the last five weeks) I would bet guys like Adam Taliaferro would argue that spinal injuries are far worse.

I was so relieved (and shocked!) to hear he could return next year. Amazing!

Good news.

NBC News reports the young kid was in crutches today walking. I'm praying he has a full recovery and there is a blessing in this injury.
