Nest Thermostat

I remember reading a post on here a while ago about the first generation of Nest Thermostats.

Was wondering if anyone actually has a second generation (or a first) and what they think of it? Is it worth the price tag has it helped save costs on monthly bills?

Because I have national grid I can also get 100 dollars off my purchase with an instant rebate so it would cost me 150 dollars. Just looking for opinions on if it is worth the price tag any help as always is greatly appreciated

I have the original Nest. I installed it last summer when I bought a condo that had an older mechanical thermostat. I like the Nest a lot. I especially like the ability to monitor and change the temperature from by phone or ipad. Nest also tells you how much energy was used per day and when it was used in that day.
I'm very happy with it but if I already had an electronic thermostat I don't know if I would have spent the money on this one. You get a rebate so that helps.

I am interested in this as well. Last year we replaced both HVAC systems in our home. The energy efficiency change was unbelievable. Cut our heating bill by nearly two thirds and our A/C bill almost in half. The two systems have variable heat and blower and serial communication with the thermostat.

We are not yet able to get in on the "Next" benefits through our power company. But as soon as we are, I'd like to try it. Two thermostats would run us around $500. At 10% savings we could pay it back in about a year and a half.

I have the newer version and like it. I don't think they will really save the energy they say they will. We are having more and more customers by them themselves and asking us to install them for them. We usually do not install parts that we do not provide. So, we charge them $200 to install them when they supply them.

That said, and yes I have one. I still don't see the need or desire to want to control ones thermostat from a remote computer.

For me, that is one of the things that I would like, that I don't have now. My home is two zones. My 21 year old son has his own zone. His section of the house has three bedrooms and two baths. It is separated by a sliding pocket door from our section of the house. My son works part time and goes to school full time. He is almost never home.

Sometimes when my wife and I are away from home and just decide to stay wherever we are few a few days, it would be nice to be able to turn down the heat or A/C. If nobody is going to be in the house we could turn everything down, and my son could turn his end back up when comes home.

We've had the 1st gen for about a year. It's cool. Does it save anything? Who knows...

I do like the ability to change it remotely though. Like I'll be in bed reading on my ipad & be hot or cold & change it without going downstairs. Or if you've been gone for a few days and turned it way back you can bump it up on your drive home so it's all nice & toasty!

I've got the 1st gen Nest. I think I started a thread when I was looking at it several months back. It's been fine so far, but I live in San Diego where most of the time the Heating/AC isn't used...like now. I haven't used either in the past 6 weeks. But it's cool and worth the cash in my opinion. Super easy to install, use and access via apps.
