Icon20 Rolex serial numbers GMT etc

Does anyone know how Rolex allocate serial numbers?

Is there a batch of sequential numbers for Submariners, GMT etc or does each watch made get the next number which I imagine is then stamped on the case and follows watch through production?

Here is thread that might help in the Rolex Reference Library section posted by Tools. As far as Rolex assigning a particular block of sequential numbers to a certain model is anyone's guess.

yes case numbers ...

were usually given in batches with some numbers ( inside the batch ) not assigned " at random " ..
so for ex. the case number 3.777.777 belongs to a 1680 but the following number 3.777.778 is " empty " ( doesn't match to any watch )

I am totally lost with this response. Are you saying Rolex assigned a certain batch of numbers to a particular model where the numbers were in sequential order? If this is the case, what are you basing your answer on?

Thanks.

Thanks Marcello, but I have found that authorized dealers are usually not a credible source for any info regarding vintage Rolex or modern Rolex except for pricing a new watch.

As far as personal experience goes, have you observed, as an example, many Submariners with block numbers within a certain range? Inquiring minds want to know.

AD are just one source of infos ( and certainly not the most important .... like watchmakers that have worked " on the Lake " ... LLOLLL )
last but not least.. in the years I have myself seen Subs/SD with extremely close case numbers ( for example 7 watches in a range of 100 numbers .. and this happens not only in milsubs and Comex ).

If you refer to the third link I posted to VRF their database shows serials and models are all over the place. Meaning they could have been batch allocated by model in small numbers of serialised regardless of model as they left the factory.

The point is nobody knows.

Maybe the best way to prevent fraud that people can guess but never actually be certain.
