First time Rolex Buyer
Hello,
As a first time buyer I wanted to see if anyone could provide a bit of advice. I am looking to buy a used submariner no date model. I was offered one at a local jewelry store today at what I thought was a good price. The watch was a 2002 model and it looked like new and was priced $4200. The guy told me they had their watchmaker work on it and he uses genuine rolex parts for the overhaul on it. Is this ok or do they need to go to rolex direct. Also is this a good price for this watch. I also found a mint 2009 for $5,000 but would prefer to spend closer to $4000. Thanks to anyone who can offer some input on my first rolex purchase! |

Welcome to TRF, they both sound like pretty good deals to me. Just be sure to buy from a reputable dealer, maybe ask for a 3 day return policy so you can get it authenticated?

The price sounds OK but you have to first make sure that the seller is reputable. Many times people say "all genuine Rolex parts" while the truth is a bit different...

Does it look like buying, selling and working on Rolex watches is part of their weekly business..? Ask to see the receipt for the parts they ordered from Rolex for the service.

+1 And sometimes it is a Rolex Part, just not the right one. When I sent my GMT in for sevice at the RSC, they told me it was a Rolex Part, just not the right one for the watch.

Have the piece authenticated. What kind of work did they do? If it's 2002 model has there been just one service done? So it may be due for a $600 service.

Thanks so much for the replies. The store seems legit as they have a huge rolex selection and they have been around for a while. The watch was just serviced by their watchmaker so the salesman told me it wouldn't be due for another 3-5 years. It also has a one year warranty. Also where could I go to get it authenticated? Would mayors do that?

Not a bad price. I'd take it to an AD and ask for a full written inspection/valuation for insurance purposes. It'll cost around $100. Most stores won't just "authenticate" a Rolex.

Make sure the AD checks the mvmnt, if its a non-ceramic then just looking at it will fool most ADs if its a franken.
