Carl, does your Dad prefer Johnny or Edgar Winter??? Just kidding or am I.....

What I really love and enjoy about Jazz is the improvisation and the fact that everyone would play on each other's albums and "Gigs" at Night Clubs for free(maybe getting a few drinks and dinner for playing in exchange)no contractual obligations to meet or Labels getting in the way(at least back before the 70's). I also found that late at night it was much easier on the ears and brain to not be listening to music at ear splitting levels(as in Rock music of all types). Plus the sound is absolutely amazing with the Saxophone being my favorite. Because with reed instruments no two people sound the same and each type of wood reed sounds different. John Coltrane by far was and is my favorite musician and who can mention the Sax without including Charlie Parker.....

Now most all Jazz musicians played for the love of the music because very few actually made very much money. And when you figure in the use of alcohol and chemicals most were broke all the time just like most all Blues Artists.....plus if you could get a record contract there still was not much money to be had for most.......

Freddie Hubbard died recently but it was his album Red Clay which made a huge impact on me...but remember it was 2AM in the morning and the "special brownies" did have their affect!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

Jazz is a tad controversial in my mind I must admit, I like to listen to some at times, there's something relaxing in this kind of song and sometimes it gives you some kind of an energy boost. Besides, I find a jazzy touch in a blues song very nice when it's well put (BB King had some jazz players in his band the two times I saw him and it was great). I must say it's not my favorite style of music though, at times I feel like it's just a bit too out-of-control for me (and I quite like long improvisations and chaotic songs at times though I must say I prefer to hear such things if they get closer to hard rock than jazz...if you understand what I mean).

Still, even though I have a mixed up opinion on this genre I must say that I've always liked Jeff Beck, I've seen him live twice and even though nobody sang during his song (the exceptions being the songs he played with Clapton the second time I saw him) and he was playing some jazz fusion I really enjoyed hearing his guitar, he sure knows how to play some incredible notes and solos.

...Now the big question...Johnny or Edgar?

...How about both?

Carl, no problem as I like both brothers...equally as both are great at the sound they produce.....

As for Jeff Beck, he is considered the best Rock guitarist to ever pick up a guitar...and his collection of guitars and fast cars would make anyone drool. And being considered the best is a sentiment shared by all the greats(his peers)who have picked up an "Axe".......

Take it easy.....Leo

He is indeed a wonderful guitarist! I was actually surprised when I realized my guitar looked a lot like his...and even more when I realized it wouldn't make me play like him!

His...

Mine...

Of course, if I really wanted to have a similar guitar I'd have to change the pickups and the tuning keys on mine but hey, I want my guitar to be more unique and different than the classics that have been used by the rock legends...

P.S.: I've heard about his cars collection but to be honest I prefer to admire Eric Clapton's watches instead...

Let's just agree that they both have worked very hard at their "Craft" and have made a few bucks along the way!!!

I can't imagine having original guitars from the 1950's worth hundreds of thousands to a million or so a piece.....

I guess it can be chalked up to the "Spoils" of War!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

I agree with you about the Winter brothers Leo, my father used to tell me that the big problem was that Johnny had never been the sharpest tool in the shed, hence the fact that a lot of people scammed and robbed him, leaving him without the money he deserved for his music (while Edgar, who apparently had always been more smart, could make a more decent living out of his music). It might be only rumors but apparently Johnny was just never lucky.

As for the guitars, I'd love to have an older one (you kind of know me...do you? ) but, as you say, they don't come cheap at all! I came across one of those on a local ad website once and the price was pretty good but I decided to let it pass...a decision I kind of regret nowadays...

Jimmy Page played on one of those during Led Zeppelin's concert in Knebworth, I believe it was in 1979.

Carl, you did know that Les developed Arthritis in his hands and arms in later years and had bone fusion surgery done to limit the pain and discomfort. He had his right arm and elbow fused in the correct position so he could continue playing guitar once he healed up.......

I can't even imagine having your arm fused in such a position and then living with it. My doctors have been firmly counseling and wanting me to have my right wrist fused(it's been dislocated for over 15 years along with my right thumb) to relieve my pain and discomfort...but I can't imagine losing all range of motion in my wrist. You use your wrists so much everyday and the loss of movement would be very difficult to deal with...and I have read up on Arthritis Forums and everyone who has had this surgery done, say don't do it. They have all said that a couple of years down the road you are worse off then before you had the surgery. Now they are doing wrist replacement surgeries nowadays but I've been told I'm to young, active and mobil for said surgery.....go figure!!!

Take it easy and keep playing.....Leo

That's one of the dials I am currently interested in. Along with the champagne roman and white roman!

The champagne jubilee dial does look great with the diamond markers. But the regular champagne dial with diamond markers looks just as good

Carl and Wes, you guys are such great musicians!

I am an artist, but not the musician kind of artist. I'm more of an artist with a pencil I specialize in Pencil/Charcoal Portraits.

I always use the decongestant, Pseudoephedrine and take two 30mg. pills every 4-6 hours. This really works well for me and back in the 1970's it was a prescription medication in/called Dimetapp. But be prepared to show your driver's license at the Pharmacy because even tho it is an OTC Med. you must show ID and sign your life away. Oh...and if you think you need an antihistamine I use the 12 hour Allegra-D(this includes both meds...)!!!

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon and this helps you.....Leo

Thank you Leo. Should play more with the electric sounds, there's organs, and rhodes pianos, harpsichords. Theres even stuff like car engines, and futuristic sounds, laser beams and drum kits etc. Could make up my own arrangement.

I need help guys.

I just spent 5 minutes gardening, it's a nightmare. Last year I removed ivy off this back wall and had to replace the fences, becuase it pulled them down. Built this pergola and planted some clematis's (also some jasmine) Anyway my dad's clever idea was to put this fine net on the walls and fence, because the clematis needs something to grab onto.

But the clematis has started pulling the net off the wall and fence, and once it has you can't tack it back on. It's a total mess. It's gonna have to come out.

So how can I get the clematis to grow on the walls and fences (like the bottom pic, obviously not mine)

Thanks Karis. I'm thinking it's easier just to move house to one that already has a lovely garden.

Sadly all of my work is in storage! I have dozens of portfolios from my Drawing courses I took in college that have been stored away. I have to go through them all one day!

Do any of you draw?

I found the best way for me is to hire a guy. I have Mr. Frank. His is retired and lives in the neighborhood. I have asked him to do what needs to be done, and he does and leaves a bill.
