New Explorer II Cyclops Question

Hey guys, I'm new to the Rolex forum. I just got a pre owned explorer II and I love it. But I have a question regarding the cyclops. When I look at the watch directly at it, it seems as if the cyclops is not perfectly centered regarding the date window, it's as if the date window is towards the bottom of the cyclops, also seems to be a little bit crooked.

It's hard to capture on photos but maybe you can see what I mean. It's not an "angle" thing, it looks like this while looking straight at it.

The first photo I took from a distance to shows the misaligned part and the second photo shows the crooked part. Is this something to worry about??

Looks a bit wonky to me. Easily corrected.

Definitely not centred, atleast the way that picture looks. Was the crystal replaced?

It seems as if the crystal needs to be rotated a little bit. If I take it to an AD can they do it on the spot? How much should I pay for something like this? Just to have an idea.

This my take as well. I think a rotation is in order.

How often this kind of stuff happens? You would think that such a high end producer would have better QC

Looks like your crystal just needs to be rotated clockwise just a tad little bit. Do you know if this is a service crystal? Should be an easy fix for any watchmaker but make sure that you have it pressure tested after the fix.
Welcome to TRF, keep us posted on how you make out.

I just recently purchase a second hand Ex II and had the same thing. Gave it to my AD who sent it to his guy. 3 days later it was perfect. Seems the watch had previously been serviced and the crystal was just a bit off. BTW, the cost to me was $25.

They make about 1,000,000 watches every year.

One SLIGHTLY misaligned cyclops isn't too bad.

You want "perfect" you'll have to readjust your definition of "high end".

I suggest you get that fixed under warranty.
This is why Rolex issues 2 year warranties.
It should be an easy fix and sends a message to us all, just because it is a new watch does not mean it is perfectly assembled or manufactured. However, if it is built to full specification and design intent (which may in some cases require a warranty service/adjustment) it will be 'perfect'

Since you bought it used - and are asking how much to pay - I'm guessing it's out of warranty. Yes, it's cocked slightly - but not worth the time it takes to fix unless it's ready for a regular servicing. Otherwise, I'd leave it until the next service.

And if it bothers you a lot, just cleave that bump right off!

I agree it's not great having it miss aligned but I wouldn't want my watch opens just to have that fixed wait till service. It's not that bad.

That's my 2 cents

Well i bought it used but still has 1 year warranty left. Not sure what to do. Should that be covered by warranty? Is that something an AD can fix? Or they have to send it to a rolex service center?.

My guess is that the crystal was replaced at some point and not correctly aligned. You can verify this by taking a loupe and locating the laser etched coronet at 6 o'clock. If it has an "S" in the crown base, its a Rolex service replacement. I believe that is correct, gentlemen?

It is definately crooked. This would drive me nuts. IMO, I would just send it back and have it replaced with a non-cyclops crystal, but do keep the original just in case.

That is correct, if the LEC has an "s" in it it is a service replacement. However the opposite is not necessarily true: just because it doesn't have the "s" crystal doesn't mean it isn't a service replacement. I seem to recall a thread not too long ago where it seems RSC is phasing out the "s" crystal or has done away with them altogether. Unless of course, they just were out of them so had to use OEM crystals until more came in. But in any event, some members here have reported getting replacement crystals without the "s" LEC.
