Auto Winders

OK. I've had my Explorer II for about 3 years now and have worn it every day. I recently bought a Daytona. This meant I needed a winder for which ever watch I'm not wearing. The winder I bought has setting for the frequency of rotation, but also direction of rotation. I currently have it set for bi-directional rotation (once clockwise, the next rotation is counter-clockwise).

My question is whether that's the correct setting? I can also set it for just clockwise or just counter-clockwise. Thoughts?

Also, I bought a two watch winder. Which means there's an empty slot. Does this mean I need another Rolex to fill the slot? ;)

It will not make a lot of difference but bi-directional is what you need around 700-750 turns should keep them ticking on your machine. Myself cannot see any point with winders especially with watches like the Daytona which don't even have a date complication.Plus the fact its got a power reserve of around 72 hours on a full manual wind.Far easier to let it stop and just rewind when its needed to tell time on the wrist.

I see your point. It's just convenient to always keep the watches wound and set. Guess I'm lazy. :)

With two watches, if you alternate every day they'd stay wound.

Well you said it about being lazy but come on how long does it take to rewind and reset any watch with a simple date or no date, less than 30 seconds with hardly any effort or energy used.

I've never seen the point of a winder. I get they look cool but I'd rather let the watch run down and go dormant.

What you need is a Five slot winder, and fill in with three more

Convenience is nice...

Most Rolex movements wind in either direction so any directional setting is OK, although most choose bi-direction so the parts get worked both ways..

The older Zenith movements were single direction..

(I do not own a winder)

I have heard it both ways...is it really OK to let watch stop and restart months later?

I love my winders, I leave the house at 5;30 every morning and don't need the hassle of screwing around with my watch, it's on my wrist and I'm out of the house.

Plus, I entertain clients in the evening and it's not uncommon that I may wear a different watch at night than the one I wore during the day.

I have to say those are some really nice winders, love the look. Yes - maybe i do not need a winder and could do it in 30 seconds as others do but I would rather have something like you have! May i ask how much one of those winders like yours would run me?

Exactly the point...they are great...have NO affect on wear of your watch ( far gentler than a wrist) and perfect for folks like us with hectic , busy , travel filled day.
Bi directional and 750 revs per day and yes you do need to fill that empty slot

I only keep the non-quickset date watches in the winder. It's a GIANT PITA to not wear a watch for a week or two and then have to sit there for 5min advancing it to where it belongs. I think 1675s are the worst because the crown is so tiny.

"Modern" watches, Milgauss, and Daytonas stay stationary. I just let them wind down and crank em up when it's time for a trip out of the box.

So what you are saying you have never got to adjust the time or the date because its on a winder. And it takes about the same time to wind a watch as its does to reset the date or time a few times a year.

So I guess the take-away from this is that 1)bi-directional is the way to go, and 2) I need to convince my wife that the empty winder slot needs to be filled with a Submariner. :)

Of course it is. Parts can't wear if they aren't moving. Modern synthetic oils don't break down like the oils of old. Many rolex watches sit for years in AD safes and folks buy them as new. Don't see how that's any different

X 2. I didnt start looking at winders until I had at least 4 automatics. I bought a triple winder, but don't find myself using it much anymore.

This thread has provided me the best reason yet to get a winder (well, this and the thread about being buried with your Rolex): To use the "empty slot" gambit on the wifey to get another watch.

Ya know...I know you are right from a technical point of view and nothing I have disproves this. However, every machine I have ever known works better and lasts longer with regular use...although I cannot justify the reasons why...I wouldn't let one of my watches sit dormant for ages. The best advise probably if you are fearful of the dreaded winder is wind them every week at least IMO. I have had Rolex now for over 30 years...I service them only when they need it ..at the most every 10 years Id say...they have been kept running every single day and I have never needed a repair ever. So Im just sayin...lot of fear spread here about keeping you watch on winders that's just nonsense.
(In fact...last week was the first balanced thread I've read so maybe at last we are embracing these very Conveniant yummy little buggers)

Op, here's the link: https://www.wolfdesigns.com/

You can sign up on their website to get email alerts and they run a few sales each year and you can save upwards of 30% when they run one. They also come with 2 year warranty's.

Padi, I respect your opinion and position as moderator but why are you always so confrontational when the subject of winders come up

I set my watches to the current time about once a month and it takes way less time than screwing with the date, am or pm, setting the time and winding the watch 40x's. Winder work with my lifestyle, that's all....
