Hi, I purchased a Clark Crystal for my 1603 but the date does not look large enough, would it look any larger if I shell out for an OEM Rolex 25-118 crystal? I asked Clark if the mag was 2.5x but he was unsure.

Besides, I think you got a MacCrystal. Didn't know Apple made em.

Naaa, that would be an iCrystal and just like everything else from apple, you pay a premium for that "i". The Rolex one will likely be cheaper and better quality (just like everything else without the "i"

Looks fine to me but depending what gasket or how its pressed into case could have a tiny effect on magnification.

There is no Gasket on an older model i am sure the knowledgable padi knows this and misread the model. the mag looks ok but original is always better, usually a bit clearer also. But I think padi is suggesting it can depend on height of the crystal.

Get an OEM crystal, and not just because of the magnification issue. You need to make sure the watch is waterproof too, of course, even if it's just for hand-washing. Compared to the price of the watch, the OEM crystals are cheap, so why take a chance?

True crystal no gasket on a 1603, the 25-118 crystal is PLEXI, the bezel is pressed over the crystal creating a pressure proof seal.

Because it is a very important part of the case I would only use genuine Rolex Parts.

I have seen many "aftermarket" crystals that can't take the pressure of the bezel, causing a crack that runs behind the bezel (very hard to see) but moisture can find it.

That's what I thought. The crystal acts as the gasket.

Try an indie watchmaker with a parts account. Perhaps $50 + have him install and pressure test.

It doesn't act as a gasket, it is simply in direct contact with the case for a pressed fit.

I went with the Clark crystal and installed it on an older Tudor I have and it is terrific, the magnification seems to be correct. The 2.5X on a Rolex jumps off the face of the dial, the 1.5X doesn't even seem to be magnified really.
