The speedmaster was an icon of Omega, but to me because of the design and dial layout (too big, only 2 registers for the chrono, date) its not an icon anymore. All other models still have the same family names, but are not actually related anymore. |

If I have to choose between an Omega and Rolex, I would go with a drilled lugs GMT II Pepsi.
If I have to get an Omega, it will be the new Seamaster PO GMT Good Planet second hand, not new. I handled the Orange PO at my Omega Boutique (The ceramic insert has the orange numbers) two weeks ago, and my jaw dropped! Now your case . . . I would go with either second hand AT, or an Explorer I either new or old. I bought a new Seamaster GMT, and later I decided to let it go to get another incoming. I lost an arm and leg despite wearing it two or three times only, and its price never increased in two years. Whichever model sings for you, go for it. Capt. Serdal

Explorer I 36mm is my favourite Rolex watch, I'd pick it over any Omega.

I have a Planet Ocean 2500, really like it, the fit, feel, performance and aesthetics, so I am ok with the Omega brand. Had considered the AT very seriously, I think it is a very well made watch, the 8500 movement is excellent, has been out there long enough now to conclude it is pretty reliable and as good as expected. But, in the meantime I bought an Explorer I, so...

Well, here's the thing. I have both an AT 8500 Skyfall and the EXP 39MM ( and had the 36MM). You're on TRF, which means that there's already a bias and that the majority ( not all) haven't tried on the AT, and simply rely on the Rolex name, their familiarity and love of the brand, and brand image to give their suggestion.
I'd say the AT 8500. Great quality. Modern, more technically advanced movement and there's so much more depth and detail to the dial. It's a much more interesting, more 3 ' dimensional' piece in terms of aesthetics. I really like the Exp but love the AT 8500. |
