College and Rolex don't come in the same sentence. You have all the time in the world to make decent money and buy yourself a decent one, maybe ceramic

Yup, this young man has fine taste except for his use of the term "Rolly". I have a Seamaster myself from the same vintage in similar condition.

When I was in college I spent all my extra (work) money on alcohol, guitar stuff, and stereo equipment. I would have been better off with a sub.

Going for a Sub after having in Omega is a pretty natural progression. Two tones are not really in vogue at the moment. So their prices will be a little soft. Like others have said, do not go on price alone. In the end, you will be unhappy. Save your money and get what you REALLY want. Happy hunting!!!

Looking at a Rolex on your wrist should give you a sense of accomplishment not a sense of guilt that you bought it with money you didn't have. Some may disagree with me on this.
Totally agree. I dabbled in a few lower end watches. Sold them all. My house is paid off. No debts. Typing with a new Exp II noir on my wrist as my first Rolex for my 40th birthday present to self!!

Thank you all for the replies. I read everybody's replies and genuinely appreciate all of the different opinions. Let me set a couple things straight - I do not want to get a '$3k watch', this is not what I meant. I don't want to just get a watch because it is expensive. I really like the SS no date and that was what I was going off of. I had checked out a couple sites like watch recon and it seemed like subs went for 3-4, but I didn't realize these were not in stellar condition. It would seem that for a nice sub it would cost a bit more than I bargained for - I thought it was the cheapest rolex, (NOT why I liked it, I honestly really like it for what it is!) but am happy that there are some other models to consider that may be easier to justify. To the people talking about my username - yes it is referring to the 911. the 997.2 is my favorite because of the LED tails and I just love the circular headlights, beautiful proportions and power. Anyway - you all have given me a lot to think about and I will definitely keep tabs with ya'll - ONE day, I WILL have my sub SS! It's my 'grail watch!'

Good for you! Just don't blow all your coin on it, keep some aside for 'oh crap' moments. Would be a bitch to have to sell something you had saved for if a short term drama popped up.

You should check out the 991, I have owned both and in my opinion the 991 is far superior. :)

It is a great idea to get a ss Sub. while in college. It is a good investment and you have so much life to enjoy it. You might blow the same amount on less meaningful spring vacations.

I wouldn't call spring vacations less meaningful. Particularly if they took place in say... Cancun

Go for it. Don't hesitate. I bought my 16610 when I was in my second year of college, I still own it. I have never had so much money in my life. I was working full time and was lucky enough to have my expenses covered. Trust me, when you hit the working world with a mortgage, utilities, car insurance and repairs, and big time income and property taxes-- it's way harder to save for expensive watches.

My academic adviser taught marketing and he would always use Rolex as an example of a company that really "gets" marketing. When I would meet with him for advice, he would always be starring at my 16610. To this day, that professor still doesn't have a Rolex :( Don't be like him. Go and get what makes you happy.

Cheers

To answer the OP's question the reason I believe the TT is about the same price as the SS is because the SS is more iconic and in my opinion (and this is just my opinion) way nicer looking. I think the aesthetics of the SS make the price what it is. The market is simply governed by how many people out there want it... and are willing to pay X for it.

On to your other question... should you get it or not. Hands down yes! Its true that you only live once and if you know a sub is what you want, then go for it. You have the rest of your life to be in debt and pay bills. College should be a time of learning but also fun and limited responsibility... the real world can sometimes be a dream crusher... so capitalize on your position as much as possible and enjoy that watch!

If I'd had a Sub in college, I'm positive it would have been stolen at some point. I was also broken into a few times, and this is in a nice college town. Get insurance.

The sub is the best watch for you I think but you should save up for a bit longer and get together $4.5-5K and then you can get yourself a very nice no date sub.

My first Rolex was a submariner and I got it my third year at U of F (go Gators!). I wish I still had it.

They will only go up in value so if you can afford it go for it.

BTW, one of the things I learned in school was not to say, "Rolly"...

You can always save $4k plus another couple thousand from your omega, and you can buy an excellent condition 114060. I rather have a great SubC than a cheap and beaten Sub and the Seamaster.

If you look around you can find nice 14060's from 4,000 to 5,000. I just got a nice unpolished example for 4,400. So I don't think he's to far off for what he's looking for, it certinally does not have to be "cheap and beaten" in that price range.

I'm a junior in college as well, nothing wrong with Rolex; its a timeless brand and they make great watches. A little over a month ago I bought my first Rolex and its well worth if you have the money now. My Datejust is exactly what i was looking for.

The main thing I would recommend is waiting until a local jewelry shop or AD has a used Sub that you can inspect before making a commitment to buying. Many used watch websites and eBayers have had one or more parts switched out for non-authentic parts, which takes away from the value massively. You can never know for sure though, unless you're buying brand new. Also, be open to other models. I considered quite a few and actually used to dislike the original Datejust model, and now I'm wearing it on my wrist as we speak.

Some of my friends have tried to tell me that I'm wasting my money; they just dont understand Rolex. My main argument for getting one now is that if I'm married in ten years with a baby on the way, am I really going to walk into the room and say, "Honey, instead of saving for living expenses and our children's college education, I'm going to spend $10,000 on a watch"? Hell no. But most of them like it and think it's pretty cool that I wanted something so expensive and just went out and got it. I have yet to meet any other college student wearing a Rolex but it's bound to happen. I live in Oregon so it's not like they're as common as Cali or NY, i think we only have 3 or 4 AD's in-state. Only time I see them are on the wrists of my friends parents/grandparents. Anyways, hope this helped. Definitely dont give up on the Sub, if you're patient you will find the right watch for the right deal.

Thank you Andy!
Just curious, what other watches did you consider? I like the DJ! Good tip on the AD, I wouldn't want any non authentic parts. Knoxville has a ton of nice places.

Personally I don't see anything strange about a college student wearing a Sub... I wear a GMT Pepsi myself while on campus, and occasionally a 6694 as well. Never had anyone notice the 6694 around college but I've had one or two comments on the GMT. Mainly I guess due to the eye catching colour combination. Saying that, I've never actually had a fellow student realize what it is... Usually its just a comment such as "Nice watch". People just don't see it up close and personal enough to read the name on the dial!

I say if you have the means to purchase a Sub then go for it! Plenty of worse stuff you could spend your money on as a student . Personally though I'd stay away from the TT. Bit old-manish for a college guy imo
