Panerai PAM 292 caseback problem
Hello, I bought my PAM 292 at the end of 2009 at Panerai AD. The problem is because the hard black coating on caseback just went off. Is there anyone with the same problem?
And the second question, how much will the Panerai service charge to paint back hard black coating on my caseback? Thank you in advance for your help, Regards |

Shocking that it can just rub off like that but it's on the bottom where it can't be seen. I wouldn't bother until the next service. Now if it's under warranty, I'd send it back and give OP a piece of my mind.

I got this answer on paneristi.com:
""so it is very common that it will wear off with time since its rubbing against your wrist. I feel like they should've just made the case back titanium or something. I'm sure you can have it re coated with a service but honestly it'll be expensive and it'll just rub off again…"" Expensive and rub off again I don't like that |

Its a wearable surface, its always going to wear off from my our chemicals on your wrist.
Personally, I like the silver look better. I would take a Capecod cloth and polish it up a little bit so it looks like it was supposed to be that way.

That looks like it was polished off. I know that even the best PVD finish will rub off with time. I've seen a PVD'd zero that was worn daily for 5 years. All the edges are rubbed lighter, but that caseback looks like it was completely cleaned off.
Here is my thought, I'd leave it as is. What does it matter that it is steel? You don't see it when worn. Panerai has commented in the past, that it doesn't do more PVD'ed watches b/c customers complain that the finish comes off. Well, it does and that is the property of PVD. It isn't like ceramics which don't. I bet your case still looks showroom new.

love the 292.
as for your back, it looks like it was completely and intentionally removed, not worn off from use. |

No way it would uniformly wear like that. I had one for a year and it showed no sighs of wear at all. One light scratch but no wear,

Wow, are you sure that the case back wasn't brushed? The finishing looks perfect, as opposed to having been worn out by time.

Can we get a side shot of where case back meets the case? I wonder how uneven that looks.

If it is properly DLC coated it does not rub off. Unless you scratch it off. DLC is PVD and combines with the metal.
