Travel or Rolex?
Hey guys. As a lot of you know, I'm over here in Iraq. Well, I'll be heading home in a few weeks; we're taking some much-earned rest and time off, and I've a lot of trips planned to celebrate the return and catch up with friends and loved ones. Twice to Cabo, two weeks in Texas, and two weeks in California visiting friends and family. Lots of side trips and activities are planned.
![]() To the point. ![]() I was laying out how much this is going to cost, and I realized that I could totally expand my Rolex collection for what I'm planning to spend on travel. ![]() For me, the trips are well worth it. I love my friends and family, and traveling is one of the joys of life. ![]() But what would YOU do?? |

Yeah, I'm not considering bailing on the trips. Friends are too important and far more valuable than a watch.
Might get a watch too. I've socked away a lot of money over the last 14 months. |

The watch will last long after the pictures have faded.

Eat when you can. Sleep when you can. See family and friends when you can. You never know when the next chance may or may not come.

Well, as I told my wife when she said my Rollie cost almost as much as our cruise this year - "Honey, when we're dead, the memories of the trip will be gone, but the Rollie will live on with our grandchildren and beyond."
![]() Yeah, didn't work on her either. Seriously, you're coming back from a major accomplishment, something we all thank you for doing. Enjoy life relaxing with friends and family while you can. ![]() Oh, and buy another Rollie anyway, just for luck! ![]() |

You should never shortchange yourself, your family, or your finances just for a watch...
Personally, I would take those trips with a new watch... ![]()

I'm lucky enough to be at the point where I can do both. But before that, the travel (and a lot of other things) definitely took center stage. That's why it took me over 40 years to finally wind up with my first Rolex...

Well, last year we went to Indonesia. My wife is from Indonesian descent and she has an old aunt who lives on Sumatra. It was her dream come true. We had the trip of our lives! Yes, pictures fade but memories don't. There is no competition with inanimate objects. We went to Java and Sumatra and travelled a lot. Money well spend but this is just my humble opinion.

Everyone will remember your trip, but only you will remember the watch. Also, thanks for serving.

How about a compromise? Travel to visit family and friends. Consider cutting down on the side trips and use the savings towards another Rolex.

Vacation in a heart beat. A vacation cannot be lost, stolen, or break (generally speaking). You will always (hopefully) have the opportunity to purchase another watch. However, if you can combine the two of them - that is the best of both worlds!
I bought my first "nice" watch on vacation, duty free, in the British Virgin Islands. It was an experience I will likely never forget, and I have something, other than memories, to cherish and remember forever. |

Kevin,
I will be in CA in a few weeks too! I am going to Tampa for TDY then tacking on some leave while CONUS. Uncle Sam picks up the bulk of the travel tickets but I still get my own rental car and other smaller flights. I may even buy another Rolex while out there. I have issues traveling to places I can go for free. My Dad wants to go to Split. I was there, armed, in 1997. I have been all over for Uncle Sam, and paid to do so. I will travel to where I want to go on my terms if it is my nickel. I am planning on a Med cruise and then maybe sail to NY on the QM2. All this while on terminal leave of course. Having 5 Rolexes would be nice, as would five vacations, but maybe you can spice it up with 2 vacations, 2 Rolexes, and a few bucks in the bank for a special watch or vacation that may arise. But this time I plan to surprise my Mother. Siblings are planning a lunch out and I will stroll on in casually, and maybe ask Mom if I can do my laundry at her house. There some some things money cannot buy. Snag those while you can, because that is where the real treasure lies. |

I would definitely travel; material things can be replaced but memories can't. The best times of my life were spent traveling, and I look forward to doing much more traveling soon.
