Rolex Comex or Complicated Patek
I asked this question in the PP thread as well. I have been thinking about my next acquisition and it really comes down to two options. I have recently shifted much of my collection to PP. I just did a big trade consolidating several watches for a new 5970J . I have been thrilled with the result. The 5970 may be the perfect watch. It's the perfect size, the layout is legible, the look is extremely elegant and the quality is remarkable. I have also been wearing other PP's as daily wearers. Nevertheless, I have always wanted a COMEX. I love the Sea Dweller and the rarity factor and romanticism of the extreme divers watch has always captured my imagination. I know it only a dial and caseback but it just is really the only Rolex now that interests me along with other rare models like the Omani SeaDweller. Which would you guys lean to in the next round of insanity? Thanks and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year to all....

Which complicated Patek are you referring too?
You already have imo, one of the best Patek's. The only way, imo, that you could top that is with either a Minute Repeater or a Tourbillion.

Comex dial does very little for me to be honest. As you say it's a dial and caseback. How much can you get out of looking at either. I'd be for the Patek but maybe something other than the same ref you have. I am in love with the new regulator.

I like the vintage far more than newer stuff so I am biased. But if you really like the
Comex and wear them the later sapphire's might be a good choice with full box, papers etc. and the price point is much better with some upside in value to come perhaps. Great to have such choices to choose from :-) M |

Sea-Dweller, no contest. And any Sea-Dweller, not just the Comex. I find those Pateks so fussy, stuffy, and busy. Amazing timepieces, of course, but they're just not my thing. It's really apples and oranges, so you need to find the watch that fits your personality, lifestyle, sensibilities, etc … Good luck either way.

oouuuccchhhh .............
oh my God !!!
well .. maybe there is also a piece of the western world history ( most unknown ) during the Cold War as they didn't only welded pipelines .... in any case ..... quoting myself : "Each time you think about the price that these guys have paid (the lives sacrificed and the hard work in hostile places) first to create, and then keep the giant energy flow that is necessary for the western world survival, you realize you have a debt towards these persons, and the reason you are wearing this watch on your wrist is to not forget them too". |

Vintage Rolex comex or Drsd all the way. I don't even like Patek. Too expensive and Most of them are ugly. Just my opinion though

Comex does nothing for me, but a Omani SD would do it if i had your choice as the added bit of colour really sets off the dial and there is the same rarity and history.

Since you already have the Patek that's perfect for you, I would get the Comex that you have always wanted. IMO it will be more satisfying than getting the same watch in a different metal.

i am, bound to say comex of course ..but in general i find doubling up on references in just different metals to be be very un rewarding.....
all comes down to what you like in watches ...if its aesthetics plus engineering ..get another patek ...if its history plus engineering get the Comex....its a question only you can answer as to which makes sense to you. the patek to me is a beautiful well engineered ( er well sort of , given two of my last 5 have gone back within a fortnight) piece of kit but it lacks a soul ....much like buying a modern ferrari .....a Comex has nothing to do with a badge or a number on the back , it has s tory to tell of the life it has led, much like a classic car ...the two things are poles apart. |

I tend to agree with what both Waspy & Jed has to say about doubling up on the same reference.
And Marcello, who's views are extremely very well respected, through out the horology world. Speaks with passion about what has laid behind the history of the Comex. Would you know, what the providence behind the Comex watch that you are considering is? For me, who is ex military, I would have to choose a Milisub. As Marcello, shows his passion for the Comex and I have NO doubt for a Milisub. I would truly love to wear with pride a Milisub, knowing what that piece may have been through!

This is a great issue to have. I'd go Patek unless I came across a full set bomb-proof Comex. More exclusive and probably more recession-proof.

Comex if you can get one in outstanding condition; papers, etc.
Patek brand new complication if you can't seek out a comex. |
