BTW- A Rolex is water-proof, thus immune to condensation.

Vman, it seems that the salesgirl can not help you to make a good decision. It is very interesting that you said the Seamaster is a tools watch, how come to make this comment as Rolex sport watches so call professional series. If you still don’t like the SD, you can try the new GMT green hand.

Glad to hear you found one that smiles to you. The Panerai 111 is a very nice watch. I'll probably be picking up either the 111, 177, or 88 for my next purchase. BTW, I hope you have already started your strap savings account

Congrats

The Rolex tool watches were designed to fulfill a certain purpose (i.e., a tool) and all were designed to maximize strength while minimizing weight (sounds great to me). They do this so effectively, that you can forget the watch is even there. I personally don't want a watch for my everyday use that is going to be obtrusive.

LOL :) I got 3 straps with the watch. Brown and black in leather plus a rubber one. It is a nice watch indeed. I really liked GMT IIc and I will consider it for my next fine watch. It feels like what I thought a Sub would feel. Not too big, not to small and it sat perfectly on the wrist. The dealer had only the TT version and I did not really want to pre-order the SS one based on my recent experience. Plus, I loved the PAM.

As for the "tool" watch, I don't disagree that a Sub is a fine tool watch, it simply did not feel right on my wrist. I voted with my wallet and I am guilty as charged :)

Thanks for all the help!

I did not think the bracelet of the SD was any different than that of the Sub.....am I wrong on this. One of the above posts seems to imply this to be the case??? Same old oyster is it not?

"It is not purely a "tool" like some claim."

Remember, the original poster seemed to think that the Seamaster line are more toolish than the sub with its heft and better bracelet. TRFers know better and educated the poster.

"However, many of those who claim that their expensive watches are "only" tools sure don't treat them that way."

So who here said that the Sub, Speedmaster, Seamasters, GMTs, aren't luxury watches? Who said that these expensive watches are just "tool" watches? Yes, they are tool watches because they serve specific purposes. Some like the Sub and Speedy Pro have proven themselves. But there is no denying the luxury cost to these items. We ALL take beauty shots!

"To me, an expensive timepiece, no matter what it looks like, is so much more than a tool. It is a tool, so it is not just jewelry."

Sure. That's what you think. For reasons known only to you, some sort of subjective value is placed. Others place different value on their watches. Some see it's historical significance; others see its practical/tool significance; others see it's monetary value; others like you mix it up

However, if someone says that the Seamaster is more "toolish" than the Sub, someones gonna say something because TRFers know the history of the Sub.

Sorry to hear that... Rolex is a true icon of watches especially the Sub but there is nothing wrong with trying the other brands like the 45m PO you mentioned... I just bought one myself and could'nt be happier! Of course if the rumors are true you may want to hold out for the new 44m Seadweller but who really knows when those will be out?

AD told me that Rolex will probably update the dials as GMT-IIc has been proven to be a major step forward. However, when I inquired about any possible changes to the Sub line, there was no response. These watches are selling like hot cakes! I agree with people on this board that a time proven design is not worth changing because it is what makes Rolex stand out.

I will be back for GMT-IIc. Loved that thing, but PAM wowed me today the most. SD feels solid as it is. For me it was night and day compared to the Sub. However, different strokes for different folks. I guess I just prefer larger watches :)

Ciao,
/v

Omega also has an extremely illustrious tool and jewelry history most of a century old. When I think of real luxury watches, I think of watches that cost more than 25K. I don't see an 8K Rolex a true luxury watch, although such is certainly exclusive and expensive. Rolex kind of set the bar with regard to the combination of impermeability, elegant robustness, and durability and scope of product. Hard to ignore the tried and true testimony of a century of history here.

I think we can put this one to bed folks. He bought a Pam 111 and is happy with it. Congratulations, vman. I never considered any Pam to be a 'tool' watch but that's in the eye of the beholder. Enjoy and maybe a Rolex is in your future yet (GMT II-c).
