Hey guys, i was just wondering how come Rolex doesn't make the explorers in gold. I figure that both the Explorers would look awesome in precious metals, but Rolex had chosen to keep them on the sporty side. They are in essence the Rolex tool that doesn't get dressy. I can understand how the idea wouldn't be practical for a Milgauss, but why do you guys think this had not happened (yet)?

I'll take a stab at it. Rolex probably figures they wouldn't sell well enough to be worth the time and money. While the Exp2 has been well received, sales of it and the Explorer are probably a few notches down from the Big 3: Sub/GMT/Daytona and I don't see that many of these in precious either. Even the GMT only comes in YG. And in the case of the Explorer you're not even getting a date function for that kind of money.

Given this, anyone looking to part with the kind of money commanded for a precious metal Rolex would probably be more interested in the one of these before considering one of the Explorers. Not to mention the DD, DD2, and the Sky Dweller.

Kind of like how many people buy the gold DJ when the DD is available for a "few" thousand more?

TT might be an interesting idea on the Explorers though.

A gold Exp II 42mm would be a grail watch for me if the finish was all brushed like the steel. Don't think it will ever happen but can live in hope!

considering that these days if one pays enough, one can climb to the top of everest, i guess a gold explorer would be fitting. personally, i don't see the point.

Don't see it happening. Rolex has been making gold Subs, GMT's, and Daytona's for decades and never offered EXP in gold. Don't think there would be much demand outside of Mike. For me....No interest-sorry.

i guess the datjust has that base more or less covered, i actually really like the all gold datejust , just simple style. although i am warming more to the day date.
guess its an age thing.

It's utter blasphemy to even think of an Explorer in precious metals and just as much so for the Submariner.

Although the 114060 is a fine looking watch, I think it would have been perfectly appropriate for Rolex to have refused to update the 14060M any further, except for the upgraded movement in the later models.

As for the Explorer not being dressy, I think that the Explorer is a pretty dressy watch, especially the 114270.

Some things are just sacred, or at least. they should be.

I think the Explorers are perfect to stay as SS only. We will much sooner see a WG GMT or even a Pt Sub before the arrival of any precious metal Explorers.
