I gave my wife the choice: big carats but yellower stone, vs smaller and D color (bright white). Would go with VS1 or VS2 at least.

She chose quality and takes comfort to this day in the knowledge that she sports a super-white sparkly stone.

The comment about quality of cut is a good one: the wrong cut kills the reflection of the light, which means it kills the brilliance. The right cut takes light in through the top of the stone and reflects as much of it as possible back out the top, and this is worth money and worth getting a smaller stone over a bigger one if it's right.

I would choose for super white sparkle over big and dull every time.

PS: my wife years later elected to go with a bezel design, which I really don't like because it hides a lot of the stone. I discouraged her from doing it for years, and then I chilled out and realized she ought to enjoy it the way she really wants to. It pains me to think of all that diamond hidden behind gold, but at least the top is fabulous.

if you spend a ton of time reading on pricescope and really know what you are looking for, your Cs should be CUT, CARAT, COLOR, CLARITY. i spent months looking for stones and got my (now) wife a nearly 2ct eyeclean SI1, I color stone that faces up very white. it is an absolute firecracker most importantly. use the HCA tool to weed out stones. you want a stone with sparkle, fire, and great light return bc it will look a lot bigger. i paid less than half of what i wouldve for a similar size XXX G/VS stone and mine prob performs a lot better than those. the internet is your best friend when it concerns diamonds. read up on the internet, find the diamonds on the internet, and buy on the internet.
