First Panerai?

Hi Guys.

I am considering my first Panerai. What do you guys think of the new 512? I tried it on and looks nice. I wanted a in-house movement as well. I have a small wrist so the largest I can wear is is 44mm.

How small is your wrist Rob? I'm a 6.5" and happily wear up to 47mm. It really depends if you have a flat or round wrist.

For a first, I'd recommend the 510 for you if you need in-house in a 44mm.

I am a 6.5 flat wrist size. Maybe I am not used to such a large watch (most of my watches are 40/42/44). I tried on a few 47mm models and they just look so big.

I'd go with a 005 despite not having an in-house movement. You get a classic and save some dollars.

510 looks nice! Potential issue is that it's a new movement, so, not as time-tested or as cheap to service as a 005/111. Other issue is if you mind the "8 DAYS" text.

512 is a great option for something a little sleeker. The faux patina is a bummer (or a plus if you like it).

Another vote for the 005...rock solid movement, price is right, solid case back, and I like painted dials for Luminors.

Good luck with the hunt!

X3...Panerai is not one of those horological houses that depends on in-house moments through out its history. Its just the opposite.

44mm, base, a tiny bit exclusive, and for me the ETA is a plus.

Keep learning, its fun to see where it takes you, enjoy the search

Ps not sure how many options you have for in house movement at 44mm?

Pps another favorite is the base radiomir 210, now discontinued.

I would say that 510 is pretty much a no-brainer ! Ultra cool piece at an easy to digest price point ..

I think the 510 would be a perfect first PAM if you want in-house movement. Iconic Luminor case, 8-day (!) movement, sandwich dial (and I like the 4-line text), and a badass vintage strap.

I actually think the 6497-based movement in the 111 is better looking, but that is a separate issue. I say go for the 510. I tried one on at the local AD last week and loved it.

If you have the cash go for a 233, the "dot" dial if you find, it was my first pam, and I really love it, have the same wrist size as you, yes 47 is too big, i even bought a 217 that i sold because it was huge, but 44's are great
