Vintage vs Modern Date Just
I'm trying to do as much research for my first Rolex purchase for a Date Just. Trying to figure out what the difference between vintage and modern Rolex is. What years are considered vintage and what is modern. Is there a huge mechanical differences? My end goal is to get 2 watches one SS datejust and one on a leather band.
Thanks Robert |

vintage datejust on a nice leather strap is great. just take your time researching and choose one when the vibe is right.

I chose a modern DJ when I was buying one. I liked the polished lugs, the solid center links, and if you get a jubilee, the "hidden" clasp makes it very elegant.

Different people draw the line in different ways. Some people use a "X years ago" standard, some people use a "four-digit/five-digit reference" standard, some go with "acrylic/sapphire".

Vintage vs Modern Date Just
I have a 1972 vintage 1603, you will find that the feel of a vintage bracelet is very light and 'tinny' compared to the new solid heavy feel of the modern Datejust bracelet.

I think all DJs are beautiful, but the new DJs have benefited most from the changes of the last decade toward larger lugs, larger cases, etc.
The Super Jubilee is also a great improvement over the old one, in my opinion.

I really like the beefier lugs of the new Submariner (it's a sports watch after all), but on the DJ, I much prefer the older, narrower, more pointy lugs. To me, they look more elegant.

Different looks different feels. As alluded to the newer Datejusts are going to feel more robust, more polished. The vintage pieces have that lighter weight, more subtle elegance. They really are different feels. I don't own too many Rolex watches but even comparing my Explorer to my slightly older 16610 you can tell that the newer pieces have a definite quality improvement however they feel less connected to their heritage as tools.
