College student, where does one find an average shape Red Sub to daily wear?
I'm just a college student. I make okay money interning this semester and would like to find a red sub *to daily wear*. I don't care about papers or it being in perfect shape like it seems most of the ones online are. Should I be browsing local pawn shops, auctions? I just want good deal on something I can wear.
Appreciate all help. |

What is your budget? The reason I ask is I have not seen a Red Sub for sale under 7k in a long time, even ones in poor condition.

Yes keep an eye out at pawn shops, CL, and most importantly (in my opinion) local mom and pop Jewelers. Most stores in my area take jewelry on consignment and/or buy them from their long-term customers. I got mine in great shape for well under market from a jeweler who had bought it from a long-term client.
Stop in and get to know them, leave your contact info and check back every now and then. Tell them you're looking for old sport rolexes; you never know what they might come across. Do your research now, learn how to spot fakes. Don't assume that just because it's at a respected jeweler it is legit; they can be fooled too. And keep the funds set aside and be ready to buy when you find it. They are out there in the wild; good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Might I suggest saving money instead? Do you or have you owned a vintage Rolex?

Start out with something easier to obtain and work your way up to a red sub. For most this is a grail watch and not something to start with.

If you want a red, be patient, do you homework, get your name out there to the Jewelers, make the rounds, and be ready to wait. I say if that's the one you want, go for it.

You can pretty much find one when you want to at the grey dealers here in Japan. Or they can source you one with a bit of time. I know that does not help you at all but I have seen some lovely examples here in Japan. Spendy, but lovely. The Japanese love vintage Rolex.

Buying a poor condition any watch should not be at the top of your list IMO. A 1680 red has over 50% of its value in the dial, the difference between a bad and a decent example is pretty minimal. You could buy a good to pristine condition 5513, 1680, or 1665 for less than the price of a bad 1680 red. Seems pretty dumb to spend thousands extra on a much more well worn watch just for a line of red text that no one but you and a few WIS will know this early in your watch collecting. While the chances of you striking a red sub for a good price from local jewelers is rare, it's always good to keep your avenues open. Also check pawn shops, I've found some pretty amazing watch deals in some pretty run down places, I'm not saying don't buy a red sub, but if you do buy one spend a little extra money for a good
Case, or buy another vintage sports model that your bound to be able to find a much better deal on. Once you make enough connections, you'll be able to find what to want at a good price. I'm looking at watches in the 3-$4k range right now and was going to buy a submariner, but I'm pretty sure I'm buying a vintage solid gold rolex instead, i can get an 18kt OP for less than $2k, then I can source a bracelet. I currently have a 35mm oyster and there will be the rest of my life to get a submariner. (Not to mention, after waiting I was offered a 5513 gloss dial for $3500 and a matte dial 5513 for 4300) deals are always around if your looking, don't just hop into one expensive watch. You could have much more fun IMO buying a lot of different watches. I'm a college student as well and while I'm not currently in an internship, I am working. And I have my first rolex that I'll never sell, my blak and gold dial oyster precision, then i have been buying other watches that I like that are good deals And flip them. So I've gotten to wear a omega Schumacher speedmaster I paid $620 for, a 5501 air king I paid $850 for, a tag heuer I paid $50 for and an omega seamaster I paid $300 for. Paid $1820, sold them all for $3000 so basically my watch collecting has gotten me my first rolex for $80. And I've been able to enjoy other fine watches as well. If I were making a bit more money I'd start doing it with submariners and stuff. But if I were you I'd just take that $7,000 buy a few watches that are well below market value, put them up for sale, wear them and keep flipping until you can get a great red sub example, and have the enjoyment of wearing other watches intil you acheive it. |

Look for a good 5513 if that's your limit. I'd rather get as good condition my money can get instead of over reaching and get something "expensive" in poor condition. Trust me on this.

You have to REALLY know your stuff not to get taken on a red sub. You are also looking in places where quality watchs are the exception. I go to pawn shops all the time. I have bought 3 and loved them all. I have passed on literally hundreds of lousy watches. You should consider a more readily available watch if you want a good piece and solid investment. Harry

... Read, I said a Red sub dial, not a red dial sub. When more common red sub dials come up for sale they seem to be in the $4-5k range. As for prices, ebay is the only place I've seen red sub dials for sale. However A red sub is 7-10k, if Someone parts it out their goal is to get more separately. Mid case is around $2k, back is around $300, insert and bezel is roughly $1000 bracelet 750, movement $1000 and a $5000 dial brings you to around $10050. Some of the prices might be slightly lower, some might be slightly higher. Red subs aren't a very common watch and my point was that he should probably look for a more common model as his budget is not very realistic for the watch he was seeking as the dial alone is around $5k.

you will not find a Red sub for 5k unless its heavily damaged or you buy it from the original owner. of course there are exceptions but they are few and far between. If its being sold retail i have not seen any under 7k recently.
If i was in your shoes and i decided that i only wanted a Red Sub i would put my 5k in the safe and save some more money. While you do that you can still look for those exceptional deals, you never know you might get lucky. You will regret buying a damaged Red if you ever wanna restore or sell it in the future. Patience will pay off huge for you in this case. This post helped me a lot when i was looking for mine. http://rolex.watchprosite.com/show-f...ti-649211/s-0/ goodluck! |

Nice dials for red Subs, depending on whether it is a meters first or feet first start around $5,000 on up. Condition dictates the price.

I would suggest that you buy a 5513 to hedge against "inflation" in Rolex price and save enough to upgrade to Red Sub at a later date. At least you get to wear a Rolex instantly.
