How much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking? It enables people to make a more accurate assessment.

It definitely shows its age, but that's not always a bad thing as I'd rather have original untouched than over-buffed and everything replaced.

Dennison from what I know were suppliers of case-guards and cases for watches and pocket watches. They had different grade metals which dictated the different guarantee's you would get with them, I think.

Welcome to TRF and I like the watch you picked up for your fiance. I do not know or have any information for you on that watch but it does have a presence and look that you do not see very often today. I'm sure he will love it and wear it with pride...I know I would!!!

Take it easy(have you set a date for your wedding yet???).....Leo

Nice old timer from the late 1940s early 1950s I would guess as its a small rose they finished around 1960 then the larger rose was introduced and the shield from around 1970 on.Now the UK firm Dennison made cases for many brands at that time including Rolex and Tudor in many metals like Gold,Silver and SS.The dial could be cleaned up a bit professionally and it would look quite a lot better after, most probably the 17 jewel FEF [Fleurier] calibre 380-2 movement.

hi

this is what the seller has said!

THE WATCH IS IN GOOD RUNNING ORDER, BUT HAS TONEING TO THE DIAL AND COULD DO WITH A NEW STRAP. APART FROM THAT CONDITION IS PRETTY GOOD FOR AGE

i know its not a rolex but i thought it was as good as! :-)

True, I guess many on this forum would agree with you there!

Well I think the fact that you have gone out on a limb and bought this for him with no guidance from anyone else aside from your own gut feeling, he'll be really pleased. It's a really nice sentiment.

I think at some point it would probably be worth getting it in front of someone reputable who can give the watch a service and a bit of a clean. This can be quite costly so when your partner gets round to doing it he'll need to shop around.

aw good as long as others think it is worth the money im happy! :-)
i think he will like it although i think i may need to tell him the links between tudor and rolex!
yeh i think it could do with a bit of a clean up too but i quite like the vintage/retro look, if it is late 40's early 50's it is 60odd yrs old! haha!

thanks for all your input its put my mind at ease :-)

I think with people who are passionate about items (obviously here it’s watches) you will find that they put a different value on different things.

I mean technically to evaluate whether it was a good deal or not you have to specify the price you paid. There are watches out there however that many people pay far less than the proper worth, or much more than real worth because if it’s what they like, they’ll generally pay for it.

What I'm saying is basically within reason the price is a little irrelevant - it's the sentiment and enjoyment he'll get out of it and what you'll get from watching him wear it.

If it all works and is essentially good-to-go I don’t think you have gone wrong!

If he’s not familiar with the Rolex/Tudor link than yes I’d say a little educating will be in order for him to fully appreciate the watch.

Hope he likes it.

Well you've put a lot of thought in to what you have bought him so far, that's very nice.

You're more than welcome and have a great wedding.

Hi,

As I also bought a Tudor Royal recently, the watch is very similar.
The case model number is the same, and only a few numbers away from the Dennison production number.
The movement is FEF 30-1, which is Rolex 59 and Tudor 59 cs.
It is a very pretty watch, my compliments.

I think you done good.

I started delving into vintage watches to get my feet wet, but I haven't yet the courage to go after Rolex and Tudor.

Someday, though!
