5 year warranty worth the extra $$?

Hi all, I am in a small dilemma. The boutique in Singapore currently offers a 5 year warranty for all watches purchased from them. It covers all servicing and parts excluding polishing, unlimited number of times that I am able to send the watch in for servicing as I wish. Am currently considering between an RG RO or a RG ROO. The boutique prices are currently on average SGD $4000 higher than what I am able to get from dealers. Question is, is it worth while to get the 5 year warranty for a SGD $4000 premium? Thank you all for reading.

Kind regards

Adrian

For me no but for watches that they only have yes! When I bought my 15202 I wanted it from AD and no AD had one but the Boutique did so I paid Boutique price. For this piece the spread is quite narrow of course as it isn't the easiest watch to find. For a normal piece I would buy from AD! Cheers,

Thank you. Just curious what's the average cost of general servicing of an AP and how often do you guys usually have to send it in for general maintenance?

Warranty is always worth it if you require the use of it.

Well if you're keeping the watch 5 years, then maybe. However, as Ken said, some pieces (15202, 44mm RG ROO, etc) are very hard watches to find at AD's, so one has to weigh the pain of waiting and hoping they will ever get one--vs. dealing with AP directly and having your watch ASAP. There is a price to instant gratification in my book.

For me recently going through this trying to find a new 44mm RG ROO novelty, it was well worth it. I was tired of the broken promises of AD's and I wanted the watch for the summer. So a few extra thousand was well worth the AP Boutique experience, 5 year warranty, AP swag , and the fact that if anything ever does go wrong, there is no question as to the validity of the warranty.

Good luck in your choice...personally I'd do it

Am probably gonna keep the watch as I don't sell off my old watches unless they are beyond repair then I just throw it away. The watches that am looking are just regular items that's easily available anywhere. The RG ROO is a 42mm and the RG ROC is just a regular watch and easily available as well.

Thank you all for your kind replies. Am just gonna weigh the pros and cons as the 5 year warranty is attractive but then again like what others have said, the extended warranty is good only if you need it.

I too found that AP quality is not as high as its fame! both my Royal Oak and
Offshore models encountered some quality issues before.

In terms of toughness and durability, falls short of Rolex considerably.

Hmmm. Well, I've had Rolex with issues as well--guess all brands can have a bad apple. For that matter I've had Patek's that had issues.

AP Service is about the best out there IMHO--both quality and turn time (3-4 weeks in the US).

AP's are not meant to be a Rolex--kinda hard to compare the two. That's the difference in a watch maker producing 1,000,000 units vs one producing by hand about 35,000 per year.

I like my GMTIIc, great solid watch, but I REALLY love my AP's!

I bought my SS Diver from AP boutique at a considerable premium. In retrospect, I should have waited to buy from an AD or a GD at a significantly lower price however, I wasn't willing to wait at that time and wanted my watch ASAP.

The 5 years warranty is worth it if it the watch should ever become faulty after 3 years and the repairs might outweigh the initial buying price but I suspect this is a rare occurrence. Boutique also offers free gifts, invitations to private events and one gets VIP treatment while making the purchase which is quite flattering. As to worth it or not, it depends on the individual.

To me no. What u save is more than sufficient to pay for repairs in future if it ever broke.

I'd rather save the money, APs are typically reliable and if anything needs repair, it'll usually be during the first year.

Thank you all for your help on this. My rationale is that I am able to charge it to a credit card and earn miles off the transaction. Am probably able to have enough miles to head off to Europe on business class frankly. So that one alone is worth quite a sum. And if I were to transact it with a dealer it will be an all cash transaction only. Thing is it's a 5 year warranty and to me it's long enough for any equipment or watches to break down least once. Am probably gonna read up more about the reliability of the watch in this forum. Thanks again for all your help. Do let me know about your experiences with your watches so far like how often do you send it in for regular servicing. Is it once every two years?

God no. The manual says 4-6 years for anything that isn't overly complicated.

I bought my 15202 from the AP boutique in Miami. It was available from trusted sellers here in the forum for about $1700 less but the ability to use a credit card as well as the 5 yr warranty for me was important. Also, sizing my bracelet was a pain and I had to ship it to them and they paid for insured fedex both ways. You also get the royal treatment and for me, it was worth it.

I am sending in my AP Diver to Clearwater today for a complete overhaul. Just curious if anyone would know if they will replace the rubberized crown to the new ceramic crown?

I personally probably would not own the watch after 5 years, so it'd only be good to me to extent it attracted a buyer when something else caught my eye.

One item to note: its excludes polishing - so its truly just mechanical failure and not applicable to cleaning up appearance if you ding it up. That'd be a negative for me.

I think I'd rather keep the cash and pay out of pocket if something went wrong outside of the 2 year warranty.
