Watch Winders
Looking for input concerning watch winders. Which one is the best. Would like one that runs on batteries as well as plug in. Want one that will fit in safe deposit box, or home safe. Is it posible to over wind my watches with the use of a watch winder?

I just bought an Eilux cylinder winder, both battery powered and ac. Orbita winders were more than I wanted to spend right now, but seem to be very highly regarded.
 I slept in a spare bedroom with an eBay winder once, and it was sooo noisy I had to unplug it. LOL stay away!

Watch winders aren't really necessary but are more a convinient gadget to keep automatic watches goin'. If you only have a couple, well even four, just wind them once a month and the watches will be just fine. Now if you have very complicated timepieces with perpetual calendar etc., a watch winder sure does come in handy to avoid having to reset the whole darned thing but otherwise you don't really need winders imo.

apparently some mimic the wrist movement more than others and cheap ones can even harm the watch by winding in one way only and no variation so as to wear down the movt. in a specific way.

I dare say that you can rig up a 555 timer IC circuit to control a motor to rotate both ways; thus avoiding wear on the movement in only one direction.
After all, it shouldn`t be very difficult to rotate a watch in both directions a few hundred times a day. SNB |
